A friend's computer refuses to boot. I have removed his HD and connected it to a machine I shall give him, running XP as his old one was. I can get into the drive ok but cannot run outlook express on that drive. Ideally I would transfer the entire outlook express folder from it on to the boot drive on the working machine but Windows won't have it saying that OE is in use.

I would like to save his address book and if possible his saved messages. Any ideas please?

    Copy these from his drive:
(Folder Options > View must be set to show hidden files and system files)

    Drive\Documents & Settings\His User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\some-long-string-of-characters\Microsoft\Outlook Express

The Outlook Express folder contains all of his mail folders. The contents can be imported into his new Outlook Express, or, after setting up his new install, run Outlook Express once, cancel out all prompts and close it, then put the contents of the backup into the Outlook Express folder.

His address book is located at:
    Drive\Documents & Settings\His User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\his-user-name.wab

Copy the WAB and put it at the same location on his new install. You can also open his WAB and export his address book as a CSV file which can then be imported into the new install address book.

Thanks TonyT. On this machine, The documents & settings folder does not contain the Outlook Express Folder. It is located in the Programs section. If I copy the old Outlook Express folder to it, it appears ad a sub folder, so is not read by OE.

All Windows XP installs have Outlook Express in the Programs folder. That's the program and its needed files, not the mail store and address book.

Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab and put a check next to "show hidden files" and "show system files ".

Then look where I told you to look.
