I use Firefox with 'Down Them All' and 'Download Helper' plugins. Between the two I have never had any problems saving You Tube, Financial or news site videos etc, but now it seems I can save them but can't open them. I use VLC player like I always have so nothing has changed there and all software and plugins are up to date. Most files seem to always in .FLV file types which the always were.
I don't know if something has changed in video saving protocols that I have missed or what. I still get some to work but more often than not they don't.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many sites constantly change their site code to try and keep ahead of apps that grab their streaming content. Or other code changes they make to their site can/may affect such browser plugins.

See if there are new versions of your plugins.

As Tony mentioned, some websites do NOT want you to download their streaming videos. They do NOT want them stored anywhere else but on their Servers.

Here's an example of what may be happening:

    1) The owners of some of these websites have their programmers alter the way their videos are streamed to try and keep people from downloading them with their video downloader programs. And once they do this, your video downloaders will no longer work.

    2) The programmers of the video downloader programs go back to work altering their programs so they will work again.

    3) Once they get it working they make the update available to everyone so they can resume stealing videos.

In other words, you are currently stuck at step two. And your guess is probably as good as anyone else's about how long it might take the programmers to fix your particular video downloader program(s).

By the way, this is a never-ending cycle. Someone alters/improves some barrier. Someone else goes to work trying to figure out a way to beat it. Once they do, the cycle will be repeated.

Thanks, After all these years of never having any problems, it looks like patience is my only resource.
