    Hi,

I recently installed a conversion prog (FVD something or other) that turned out to be something I really didn't want so, after uninstalling I looked around for leftovers and found hundreds and hundreds, a lot of which were in C:\RECYCLER - however this directory appears not to exist!

Any ideas how to get rid?

    Keith-

Perhaps those hundreds of files will disappear from your searches if you empty your Recycle Bin on your Windows desktop.

The C:\RECYCLER folder is a hidden folder and I think Windows XP is normally configured to not display hidden files and folders.

If you want to display the C:\RECYCLER folder (and other hidden files and folders), then Windows XP can be configured to do so.

    Thanks mailman, you were right.

I had previously looked in the recycle bin but the stuff in there I recognised as stuff I'd got rid of. There was no sign of any fvd stuff so I ran CCleaner (which empties my Recycle Bin) and voilà, there they were, gone!

I have got my XP set up to show hidden files but there was still no sign of the Recycle Bin folder?

    Anyway, no matter, they've gone!

    Thanks again,

    Keith-

You're welcome! I'm glad your problem is solved.

I suspect you still cannot view the C:\RECYCLER folder because, in addition to configuring Windows XP to view hidden files and folders, you need to UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" in Windows Explorer's
Tools > Folder Options > "View" tab > "Advanced settings:" window.

I expect Microsoft makes one go that extra step (and recommends you leave them hidden) because giving oneself the ability to view operating system files increases one's chances of deleting such files/folders (such as the C:\RECYCLER folder). Deleting operating system files can have catastrophic consequences regarding the computer's operation and may ruin your day.

Please consider this message a friendly warning (to everyone who may try this) to be extra cautious. :)

[EDIT] By the way, after unchecking "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" and saving that setting, you'll probably notice the icons for such hidden files and folders are "faded" in Windows Explorer. Serves as a cue to be cautious with such files/folders.
