Tricky question: Is it possible to identify the version of Incredimail that was running on a crashed pc by examining its files - exe, dlls, etc?

Incredimail was running on a customer's Win7 laptop. The OS died and can't be resurrected (don't ask - I've spent days trying every fix in the book). It's vital that I restore the customer's emails.

Everything is visible on the hard drive so I've saved all the files that relate to Incredimail. I've set up Win7 on another drive and plan to add Incredimail.

BUT! - big problem, according to other user's complaints spotted online. Unless you install the correct version of Incredimail, the old files won't be usable or readable.

The Incredimail so-called "Helpdesk" won't respond to my emails. I can't even register on their forum, in spite of attempting four different registrations under different names and addresses. Bit of a Michael Mouse outfit, IMHO.

So - anyone out there in email-client-land able to answer this one? Oh, and please don't tell me to look at the 'Help > About' section. :)

Thanks, I'd looked at that one. Unfortunately it doesn't tell you how to identify the old version, and data from certain different versions aren't interchangeable.

The situation has got slightly worse since I posted. Been combing through his old drive and discovered that his old Incredimail (whatever version that might be :)) is French. Sheesh. Who'd be an IT guy?

Sorry I won't be of any help as my native language is English. Will Babylfish do the translation? I hope I spelt that correctly - going off memory as I haven't had to get so involved. Neil.

Well...if you'd ever tried to install a non-English version of an app you'd know the problems. Just making selections during the install is challenging - like selecting options, locations etc.
Translation isn't that big a deal - Google Translate is easier than BabelFish IMHO - I have a few French customers and I find it easier, when on the job at their place, to type what I want to say into Google Translate, then have them do their reply the same way.
But having to use a foreign version of an unfamiliar app just makes it that much harder.
    We're both in Long-White-Cloud-Land, BTW :)

No, I didn't - it never occurred to me. How did you do it? Change the .exe to .txt? There's no 'Open with' option for exes on my XP machines. Is it a function of Vista or W7? Curious...

You can open any file in Notepad. Open notepad, select File > Open, change Files of type to All Files, browse to the EXE and double click it to open.

But then again, if you have the EXE, in Windows Explorer, right-click the EXE, click Properties, select the Version tab and the File version is listed right there.

You're right - Notepad does bring up that information. BTW, 'All files' must be the Notepad option - I'm using EditPad Lite and the option is 'Any files'.

Having got there, I guess the option is just to do a Ctrl\F search for 'version' or 'myversion' or exe or the name of the program.

Re right-clicking exes to get the properties, I've noticed that a few of the exes in my program files folder don't have a version tab. Must be an option? Or bad programming, maybe?

A search for the string "version" or "v e r s i o n" may not work because there's often a null (ascii 00) character between the viewable characters.

As you can see in the above example though, the version info is usually near the bottom of the file.

SpywareDr, I'm trying to relate your screenshot with an actual app version. I know it says '5.0.0.3' but I can't find it here on oldapps: Is it possible that there's another version number in there somewhere?

    Here's a heads-up, FYI:
Didn't have much luck following up your kindly offered fixes.
What did work was I had a closer look at the customer's hard drive (which has all its data intact but had succumbed to the W7 'Black Screen Of Death' disease) and discovered an Incredimail installer dated March 2012. It was only a 460k file, but I managed to track down the executable that the installer is associated with, and got it from another French Incredimail user.

So far two trial installs on workshop machines have been successful and imported the old mail data, so I'm just trying it on his rebuilt hard drive.

If I've learned anything during this exercise, it's that next time I'm asked to fix a Black Screen Of Death, my response might be, 'Sorry - you need Windows reinstalled'.
