    DT,

This may be too simple but it happened to me and I don't think this would bump up against the Password policies on this Board. I never created a password on my Dell laptop but I get a password prompt when I power up. I simply hit "Enter" without entering a password and my system opens up.

maybe I can approach this issue in another way

the problem with passwords is that they take up time and if you forget them, you can only use windows if you delete all your data and settings and programs and start over.

Is there a way to tell windows not to set up passwords when you are setting up the system?

do we just use the method Virginia mentioned?

    If you don't lock:
    your house,
    your car,
    your toolbox,
    your computer,
    etc.,
    etc.,
    etc.,
whatever stuff you have stored in them
    will NOT
    be your stuff for long.

    What's your address?
    Your phone number(s)?
    Your Mom and Dad's names?

If you can remember those then why can't you memorize a password?

Set a password (it prevents grief later!) and then use this: Windows 7: Log into your User Account Automatically

    And note my note!
