All of a sudden my tool bar disappears, leaving only the task bar. When I click on Home, etc the tool bar appears but no text appears when I type.. Contrariwise, when the tool bar doesn't appear I can see my text on the screen. What do you think is the problem and how can I fix it?

I use an HP Pavilion Slimline with Windows 7 and Word 2010.

    Thanks for any help.

I'm trying to wrap my mind around this and I can't. Is there a way you can take a screenshot of what is going on, and post the link?

    Disappearig tool bar

    Sorry.

When I'm in Word 2010 the only functions list Home, Insert, Mailings, etc. To get the menus that list Print, File, Font, Select, etc., I have to click on Home. But although that tool bar appears, no text appears when I try to type.

If I want to change any text I have to go to Home and choose Underline or Font, or whatever but can't type letters or numbers.

This is very worrisome as I am responsible for a great deal of typing and editing including layouts.

Longshot here, since I've never come across this problem before:

Look on the right side of Word's screen, right next to the blue question mark. There should be an arrow; click on the arrow. What happens when you click it (toggle it up or down)? DOes that bring back the "toolbar" (BTW--for Word 2010, it is called a Ribbon--the Home ribbon, insert ribbon, Page Layout ribbon, etc.).

I don't know if this will fix your issue but I thought it would be worth a try.

Sorry, but I don't know how to make a screen shot. Anyway, since nothing shows on the screen, would anything show in a screen shot?

What it boils down to is that either my text OR the tool bar will show up. If the text shows up, the tool bar won't. If the tool bar at the top of the screen appears (which it only does if I click on Home) then no text appears when I type.

I hope this a a clearer statement of the problen.
