    Hi,

I have been having a problem with Norton SystemWorks Pro 2001 LiveUpdate for a while now, but have left it until Symantec stop supporting the product before I try and solve it! I have it installed on a Windows ME system. The version of LiveUpdate I am using is 1.80.19.0 which is the latest, I think.

The problem is that Automatic LiveUpdate has never worked. LiveUpdate works fine when I start it manually. When I open the SystemWorks control panel, click on Options, then Norton AntiVirus, then LiveUpdate on the left hand side brings up the control for switching on "Enable Automatic Live Updateâ€. I tick that, and select "Apply updates without interrupting meâ€, then OK my way out of the program.

When I repeat the above process, the "Enable Automatic Live Update" box is unticked. It refuses to stay ticked, no matter what I do.

I don’t think it is an issue with my firewall. I heard somewhere that if I delete the entry for LiveUpdate in MS Scheduled Tasks, then re-enter it, that would cure it, but it doesn’t.

Has anyone got a cure for this, please?

    Regards

    Spike:confused:

I do not think that NSW2001 is compatable with ME.

Can't help you with your problem but I was running NSW2001 (not the PRO version) in Windows ME up to a few weeks ago when I upgraded to NSW2002 PRO. NSW 2001 worked fine in my system. Also been using Norton's firewall.

Spike: I had the same problem. I started a thread on this BBS a week or so ago about it. You could do a search here and check it out in detail.

I'm running a Win XP system with Norton's Anti-Virus 2003, but the problem is probably the same and so is the solution. You first have to set up Windows' Task Scheduler to make the Automatic LiveUpdate downloads work. That in turn requires that you set up User Accounts in Control Panel just right, including a password (there is a way to bypass that later so you won't be bothered by having to enter that password each time you boot up).

There's a fair amount of fuss and bother to it all, but after I'd been on-line numerous times with tech support at Microsoft, Symantec, and Dell (my computer's brand) and studied their Web sites' Knowledge Bases and databases that applied to our problem, as well as several exchanges with helpful people on this BBS, I finally solved the problem. But I also learned that Automatic LiveUpdate may not after all be the best idea. The new virus definitions are usually sent out only once a week, on Wednesdays. Manually getting them as you have been doing is probably faster if you do it more frequently than that.

Get back to us and let us know what if any progress you make.

    Live update

    Hi,
I have had exactly the same problem. I also run WinMe but do not have NSW.
However, I do not really thik this problem has got anything to do with it.
What I did was the following: I went to www.symantec.com and followed the links to download the latest virus defs., then I downloaded them and installed them (.exe file).
After this Live Update normally works.
It seems the problem presents itself any time there is some major update ... I do not understand it, but this seemed to work fine for me. It is worth a try.
    Good luck.
