A friend of mine just got a SMART write error window. She said that there was an offer to submit a CC to get it fixed. That sounded like scamware so I said not to pay anything. Then I looked this up and found out that SMART write error is/can be the computer's early warning system just before it is about to go caput.

Is this the case? And if so, does this mean the computer has minutes/hours left? or can it wait a couple of days.... sorry if this answer requires a crystal ball.

My first guess would be Malware/Spyware. Usually they want you to send $$$ to them to fix it. Have her join here and post the problem in the Malware section. Ole Broni should have it fixed in no time.
Explain to here about her system info. to be done in User CP and be sure to save it.

I'd get myself a SMART reading utility such as http://www.hdtune.com/index.html

Otherwise get a linux live boot cd and use the Hard Disk utility on it. Most - if not all Linux distros include a program called Disk Utility. It will read the HD and let you know if its heading South or not...

    I would say 99.9% chance of Malware/Scamware.

Sorry, don't know. At any rate, they're getting a new laptop.
