Do you have access to a USB keyboard that you can plug in meantime?

Ok, new keyboard is installed and working. Ran check disk a couple of times. Each time it fixes the same two files. Plus when I go to shutdown or log off it hangs in the log off process. I let is sit for several hours once to make sure it wasn't trying to fix/recover something, but to no avail.

Also, I managed to create a new profile and migrated all the files to it from the old profile. That seems to be working. In fact when I try to log onto the old profile it immediately goes to logging off then hangs.

Sounds like I still have some corrupted system files to me. Thoughts?

I doubt it.. If you had corrupted system files, I'd expect it to crash whatever profile you were trying to load.

Are you saying that everything works ok on the new profile you created but not on the old profile?

If so, then the answer's simple. You migrate everything you need over to the new profile and then delete the old profile making sure you take the option to delete all the files pertaining to the old profile. It sounds like one of the files in the application data folder is giving you the problems. Don't forget to make sure that you migrate your emails if you do so. I made that mistake once - never again!!!

I'm saying that almost everything works ok with the new profile. The computer won't shutdown. It hangs during the log off process. I will delete the old profile and see if the problem goes away.

(I won't forget the email files, this time. ;) Been there done that too.)

I'd still feel better if I could some how refresh systems files.

You can always run sfc /scannow.

    More details here.

Reading the info from your link it appears this is for Windows 7. I'm running Vista.

Most, if not all, applies to Vista as much as to Win7.

I deleted the old profile and it shuts down properly now and seems to be working correctly otherwise. I may try the scannow, eventually. But for now I need to turn my attention to my desktop, which as luck would have (bad that is), a bad HD drive and won't boot up.

    Aaaack!!!!

As it happens, I'm working on trying to recover a bad disk right now.... But for now I reckon if you have resolved this issue you should mark the thread resolved and start a new one for your bad disk if you need to...

    Solved

I already started the new thread for the desktop.
Just can't figure out how to mark this one as solved. When I started the new thread it had a drop down box next to the title for "solved ", but it's not there when I reply to this post.

I'm sure I'm missing the obvious.
