Or better, how can I bring it back? I like using my right-click menu to create a new doc, but now the only options are a few OpenOffice options. What can I do to get the ability to create a new .doc file? I recently installed a new version of OpenOffice, but I'm not sure why/how that could have eliminated my right-click .doc option.

I saw a registry fix online, that I d/l and tried, and it was imported into my registry, but this didn't restore anything to my right-click menu.

It's quite possible that when you installed openoffice.org that you allowed it to be the default application for Microsoft file types.

OK, but even if I did, you're saying that that would remove certain items from the right-click menu?

At any rate, any way to get the .doc entry back?

Do you have MS Office installed?

Yes, it is 2010 Office Professional Plus. Its been on this laptop since I first bought it (the laptop).

Would a repair install be in order? I tried that, but in the Add-Remove programs window didn't see a way to do that.

In the add-remove programs, select Microsoft Office and then click on the Repair button atop the list.

    N/m.
I clicked on the installation files (I downloaded it, didn't get it from a CD), and it is giving me the option to repair. I'll do this and then see what happens.

That did it. I got my .doc file-making ability back.

That said, I "m not sure at all, why I couldn't do a repair install of MS Office from the Add-Remove programs window. Oh well.

You probably should have selected Professional Plus.

Pardon me while I'm having a major Duh! moment.

I don't recall ever installing an "ordinary" version of MS Office 2010, so I figured that that was in fact my office installation. I know this laptop came with a starter version of Office, or a temporary trial, but I installed Pro Plus because that came with a much better price.

    Lesson learned: keep reading.

Next time you get a comp with the trial version of Office, completely uninstall it prior to installing a full version that you already have or that your purchase.
