For a few days now I have been presented with a system tray icon telling me that there are updates ready for my computer.

If I go to updates through the icon, the system attempts to install HID Non-User Input Data Filter (KB 911895), but it fails, and says "The following updates were not installed: HID Non-User etc etc "

If I go to the Windows Update site directly, I get the normal "Checking for the correct files " message and then the normal option of Express or Custom download.

Whichever option I choose gives the same result, which is a screen telling me that
Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem [Continue]

Choosing the recommended option loops me back, via Downloading the latest files etc etc, to the normal option of Express or Custom download.

At which point my sense of humour gets strained.:(

Furthermore, if I go through the Control Panel to Security Center/Manage security settings for:/Automatic Updates, all the options are greyed out. I would like them to be available again.

Can anyone suggest a remedy please?

Thank you for the response Omo.

The second part, about regaining control of the Automatic Updates options, did work, thank you.

I have tried both solutions in the first link, regarding the Automatic Update files, but neither of them have worked for me.

Ok. Since Windows Update is still asking you to reinstall the files in order for it to work try this, How to reset Windows Update components.

If that doesn't work then try installing the latest version of the Windows Update Agent.

After the Windows Update Agent installs go ahead and reboot the computer and then see if you can access the Windows Update website.

    Still no solution.

I downloaded Fixit and ran it, but it didn't resolve the problem.

I tried the second link, but when I tried to download the files I was told that "Install (sic) is not needed since Windows Update Agent is already installed ".

Click Start< Run and type services.msc and hit enter. Are both the Automatic Updates and the BITS Service on Automatic and are Started?

If they are Started then we know its not a service problem. Now click Start< Run and type regsvr32 wuauserv.dll and hit enter.

Then try installing the latest version of Microsoft XML Parser from here, Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7).

Once that program installs, reboot the computer and then see if you can access the Windows Update website.

    Good news.

Yes Evan, both services were started.

I installed the latest XML Parser and that has resolved the problem when I visit the Windows Update site :)

Several updates were ready and all except one installed correctly.

The one I referred to in my first post, HID Non-User Input Data Filter (KB 911895), still appears, but alongside the Install Updates button it says Download size (total): 0 KB *
Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes *
    (*Downloaded; ready to install)
    "

Clicking the system tray's update icon eventually leads to me being informed that it can't be installed. Well, being 0 KB that's understandable I suppose, but how can I stop the system listing/offering it?

Click on the yellow shield icon in the taskbar to bring up the Automatic Updates window. Then click on Custom Install. When the update shows up uncheck the checkbox for the update and click Ok. Then click the checkbox that says don't notify me about this update again. Then click on Ok. The update should be hidden now.

    Security Updates

Hello, not sure if this is the right place to post; windows update works just fine on my pc except with Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2416447 ")I worry that failing to install this update puts my pc at risk. Any suggestions regarding this matter will be appreciated.

Hi jhona. Even though you have a similar problem regarding Windows Updates, please don't hijack someone elses thread. It would be better if you created a new thread instead of posting your problem in this thread. Thanks.
