    HI
I was reading the Thread about the Acer laptop with bad USB ports on motherboard. I have a HP NC6000 with bad ports, they are recognized by BIO's, but when you plug into them item is not recognized. So I purchased a 4 Port USB 2.0 cardbus for PCMCIA. I am using Vista, SP2. Cardbus is not recognized. It did say card was compatable with XP and some older windows. Is there a driver for Vista or Windows 7 ?

    Thanks
    Pete LaFleur

    Hi Pete,

I'm assuming you've tried checking the cardbus manufacturer's website and drawn a blank.

If you go to control panel, run the Add Hardware wizard.

First try Search and install automatically and if there's no joy with that then select manual method. Click next then next again and select PCMCIA adapters from the list provided. This should install a generic driver and get you going.

Once its working, there's a good chance it'll then find a better driver than the generic one.

Looking for drivers: 4 Port USB 2.0 cardbus for PCMCIA on HP nc6000

Thanks I will try, It is one I got from e-bay, made in china, don't even know who made it. That could be problem. I think I tried to install or find new hardware and didn't. Will try later as it's a different computer then one I am using now.

OK I tried pluging in PCMCIA card in after computer was on. Didn't say found new hardware, so I when to ad new hardware and manually picked PCMCIA didn't see usb card. The ports work as I have two hard drives for computer one has Win XP and has driver for it. If you plug in card it finds it, and works. But not with drive with Vista. Card is USB 2.0 Cardbus, 32 bit pc card.

The next plan of attack then is to verify that the cardbus isn't a dud. You need to find someone with a laptop that has XP (if you don't have one yourself of course) and plug it into that other one. It should be detected if its compatible with XP. If it isn't detected, then its likely the cardbus is a dud.

I have another harddrive with XP for same computer, It will detect and load driver and card works. I was checking E-bay and found some of same brand and they say will not support Vista, so I guess have solved that problem. Just have to keep drive with XP in computer.

    Thanks for your help

Did you try running the cardbus installer in compatibility mode?

Yes. Run it in compatibility mode.

Open the Cd in explorer, right click on the installer and select properties. Select the compatibility tab. Then tick the box "Run this program in compatibilty for" and select XP Service pack 3 from the dropdown. I'd also be inclined to run it as administrator too.

I don't know if this will help but, I read your thread and want to inject my two cents. I have found this free software beneficial in automatically finding and installing updates. Perhaps this would help.

    http://secunia.com

It sits in my quick launch tray and, when it finds updates, it turns from "green" to "yellow" indicating that there are improvements to be had.
