Hello, during a search thru Google Webmaster Tools I see several crawl errors so some files were downloaded in Excel format and shows me what is wrong.

I am fixing the problem so the Search Engines can know where are the true pages now but it seems I have to create so many re-directs. Below is a sample.

    Redirect 301 /index.php http://www.kleinerts.com/index.html
    Redirect 301 /media/sitemap.html http://www.kleinerts.com/Sitemap.xml
    Redirect 301 /sitemap.html http://www.kleinerts.com/Sitemap.xml
    Redirect 301 /EmailContact.aspx http://www.kleinerts.com/index.html
    Redirect 301 /news.php http://www.kleinerts.com/news_index.php
    Redirect 301 /fabrapel.php http://www.kleinerts.com/shields.php
    Redirect 301 /sitemap.php http://www.kleinerts.com/Sitemap.xml
    Redirect 301 /lacoste-sport-tshirts-men.php http://www.kleinerts.com/mens-sports-shirts.php
    Redirect 301 /categories.php http://www.kleinerts.com/index.html
    Redirect 301 /$1 http://www.kleinerts.com/index.html
    Redirect 301 /Sponsored http://www.kleinerts.com/index.html
    Redirect 301 /Bedding-Protect http://www.kleinerts.com/Bedding-Protectors.php

I have over 40 done. Is there a way to have less of these 301's and accomplish the same thing? Each file I need to redirect is different so I can see why I had to make so many. Is there also a limit into how much can be put in an .htaccess file?

    Thank you

If I were doing that site, I'd create a full sitemap.xml and submit it manually via Google webmaster tools. Then I'd create a custom 404 redirect to sitemap.html so that any pages that visitors land on that don't exist go to the sitemap with a short "Oops - the page you want has moved!!" apology. That way you cover all your broken links and, in a short time, Google will have your site re-indexed anyway and the problem is solved.

Thank you very much for your reply. I just learned something new and did not think of that. I just updated my .htaccess file with 60+ entries.

I do not have a sitemap.html file only the XML. So I should make the html file. If you do not mind could you provide some code for the 404 redirect, I am new at this that is why I ask.

Thank you for all the info. I have spoken with my boss and he wants to stay with what I did. He prefers not to show any type of error page but I will take your advice and work on a html sitemap also besides the XML we already have.
