Don't have anymore space for nor do I want to create another partition. Can I install and boot W8 from an external USB drive?

You could just try & then tell us :D

Yea, I know, it may be handy to ask. I haven't tried it, nor am I planning to, I have way to much testing to do anyway.

I did upgrade my Win7 system yesterday. I was back in Win7 within 2 hours!

    Arie,

I'll give it a try and let you know. That is as soon as I can get the iso downloaded.

    Arie,

Downloaded and burned the iso to a disk. It does boot but the process stops when it gets to a blueish/green blank screen. Gave it a half hour just in case. Didn't help. The disk will run in W7 but it will only install on my C drive and that ain't gonna happen. I did check the disk integrity and it came up clean.

Turns out that the burned iso was a bit off. Burned another and it was able to go thru the entire boot process and get to the installation process but got W8message saying W8 cannot be installed on a USB or IEEE device.

Thinking about it, it does make sense. You could attach it to different hardware... Windows wouldn't start.

Microsoft does have a fully functional copy of Windows 8 running from a USB. They call it "Windows to Go ". Your customized version of Windows 8 is always with you regardless of the device the USB is connected to.

Yes, with the search site:microsoft.com "Windows to Go " entered...

I'd just point to this TechNet Article: Windows To Go Step by Step.

I'll have to try that if I have a chance... although, doesn't seem easy:

It's more than I care to handle and, in any event, I have no use for a mobile OS.
