I have a Canon MX870 multifunction printer wirelessly connected to my Acer laptop. The MX870 is not connected via USB at any time.
I have had a devil of a job to succesfully reinstall the printer after it stopped faxing correctly. I went through the process of deleting printers from Devices and Printers, uninstalling all apps associated with Canon, ran CCleaner and Registry Repair, run full system scans for viruses and malware then reinstalled the printer from scratch (after checking on Canon's website for later versions of software and drivers).
Finally, Devices and Printers shows Canon MX870 series Printer and Canon MX870 series FAX - both work fine.
However, in Word 2010 when I select File, Print I see three additional printers - Canon MX870 series Printer (copy 1), Canon MX870 series Printer (copy 2) and Canon MX870 series Printer (copy 3)!!
Also, in Devices and Printers when I right click the printer and point to Printer Properties all four printers are listed.

What has caused these extra "copies" of the printer (all of which I can print to, by the way) but more importantly how can I get rid of them?

Thanks to anyone out there who can help

Right click on them one at a time and Delete. Should do the trick. Make sure the one you leave is the Default printer. Neil.

Can't do that - all you can do is access each printer's properties which shows the tabs General, Sharing, Ports etc.. There is no option to delete or remove the printer.

If you're bold - you could search the registry and see if the extra entries are there and then delete them.

Good thinking! I've just done that and all those printers have disappeared.
Problem now is the remaining printer and fax refuse to go online despite troubleshooting and reboots.
Tomorrow (time for bed now) I will restore the registry and take it from there.
Will let you know how I go.
    Thanks - Norm

I would uninstall/resinstall the printer instead of restoring the reg.

Uninstalled and reinstalled printer which still refuses to go online.
Then installed the printer via USB which works OK when printing from (say) M/S Word but it doesn't appear in Devices and Printers!!

Next step: Uninstalled everthing related to printers, deleted every registry entry relating to a Canon printer, removed every printer from Devices and Printers, deleted Canon folder from Program Files, restarted laptop, reinstalled printer (wireless). Now works OK and returns to ready after restart (in fact it remains in a "ready" state even when it's powered off).

I'll leave this thread open for a few days in case the situation changes.
