A few years back I installed the free internet security program offered by my ISP (F-Secure). After a year, I uninstalled it and installed a different program.

Yesterday I decided to try the consumer install of Windows 8. Everything was fine until it discovered that F-Secure was still on my system and needed to be removed.

Now... here's the problem. I first brought up Revo Uninstaller but there were no traces of F-Secure there. Then I searched in the listing of programs but found nothing there. I then did a search on my C-drive and still found nothing.

Then I looked in Regedit and found one instance of it which I cautiously removed. But still... the Win8 installer insists that F-Secure is on my system and needs to be uninstalled.

How is it finding this program (or traces of it) and how do "I" find it and remove it?

Thanks. Now that was weird. I downloaded the zip file and extracted the exe. After running it and accepting its terms, it simply rebooted my computer. I tried it a second time... same thing. I then ran the Win8 installer only to have it tell me, F-Secure 2012-2011 still needed to be removed. It "is" removed to all intents and purposes but evidently there is something somewhere that indicates it is there and so an install of Win8 is impossible. Any other ideas? Oh... I tried contacting Charter but they were completely unable to resolve the situation. Their advice was to go into the Add/Remove programs, etc.

If F-Secure's own uninstall utility doesn't remove it, then the only option you have, given that you've also tried Revo, is to contact F-Secure support and hopefully they can help you further - unless anyone else has another idea....

When you download Win 8 - did you burn it to cd and are trying to install it on a clean partition? Or are you booting off the new Win 8 cd and are trying to replace an existing operating system?

I did not burn it but rather tried to replace an existing OS.

    Hi leushino.

So you are trying to perform a clean install of Windows 8 to replace your current Windows installation correct?

Exactly. The point is... F-Secure has bee removed thoroughly from my system. As a matter of fact, I even did a Regedit and found one file that I removed. How the installation found something indication F-Secure (2010-1011) was still there is the real mystery... not so much the inability to install the new OS.

So... putting aside the failure of installation: how does one go about thoroughly purging a computer of an older program when it does not appear in the Add/Remove list, Revo Uninstaller does not have a record of it, a Search of the various drives does not find it?

A clean install implies formatting the hard drive, which will remove everything - have you formatted the drive?

Wait, but if you are replacing your current OS why don't you just format the partition and perform a clean install of Windows 8?

If you already searched regedit, and your C drive for remnants of the program to remove then I wouldn't know why the Windows 8 setup is still detecting that you have the F-Secure program installed. There must be some trace of the program somewhere.

Normally doing the procedure that you described above is sufficient enough to remove all traces of an already uninstalled program.
