I sit in my dining room everyday using my laptop which is wirelessly connected to my Router on the 2nd floor. My laptop works fine as does another one in the same location but I am puzzled by why the Wi-Fi signal changes strength from very good to poor in the same location at different times of the day. Sometimes the strength is very good and sometimes it is poor. In either case my laptop works fine, but it is sort of mysterious. Nothing else is going on with the router during these times.
    Thanks.

The signal from the router is not constant or static, it fluctuates, as does the wifi adapter's ability to detect the signal.

Fluctuation is normal, but excessive fluctuation can be caused by interference from other 80211 wireless devices and gadgets, such as microwave ovens, garage door openers, baby monitors, other wifi routers in neighborhood, etc.

Also, the wifi router can use a certain amount of wifi channels. The 2 channels with the least amount of signal overlap are channel 1 and channel 11. Set your router to use one of those channels. By default, most wifi routers are set to channel 6, which has the greatest amount of signal overlap.

Thanks for your response. I did set the router to Channel 11, and when I use the laptop there is usually nothing else running in my house, like a microwave. Perhaps it is other routers in my neighborhood, I know there are several when I look at the networks coming up on my router.

Hi, there is hopefully nothing wrong with your laptop wifi connection, if it was it would have not detected any signal at all in the first place. I experience the same problem many times and the only solution i know is to reset the router by powering it from on to off and back to on again. Basically what i have noticed that even walls and number of doors in between your router and your using location affects the signal strength. So in your case if you are not actually at the second floor where the router is placed then you will feel this fluctuation from time to time. There may be other waves in the air with different frequencies which might disturb its power. So relax, there is nothing wrong with your laptop WIFI connection, neither is your router giving you any trouble. Its just normal to see such fluctuations. Hope that helps.

Since all my laptops work on the first floor I am not agitated by this variation in signal strength. I asked the question because I am curious, nothing more :)
