Someone I know who uses AOL just got a USR V.92 modem. I tried to set it up for him; but, no luck at all. It will connect to the internet okay; however, the incoming call notification just doesn't work at all. I stayed on the phone off and on with USR for two and a half hours. Finally, they had me duplicating everything I had already done--redownloading updates I had already just downloaded, uninstall and reinstall the same things over again. That's when I called it quits.

Has anyone here ever gotten this feature to work with a v.92 modem? If so, can you tell me your experience? Also, does this feature actually allow someone to stay on the second (voice) call indefinitely without losing the internet connection?

    Hi Alex

Had very good performance from my Actiontec 56K Internal PCI Call Waiting Modem. It was pretty much a load and go in w95. With 2 adults and four teenagers the phone would not stop ringing, including when we where online (then modem rings). Would have been perfect if local phone company would have provided call waiting caller ID. Then you could decide if you wanted to take the call.... once you did you had about 15 seconds to hang the phone backup. If you did, you continued with your surfing. 3 months ago local cable provided some package deals including broadband ISP. We took the deal and now can surf and yak on the phone intil we drop.

I've already been through two and a half hours of this type troubleshooting with USR; what I am looking for in this post is the account of the experience of others who have such a modem and have tried to make it work--successful or unsuccessful.

    Dennis,
Does the modem you wrote about specifically support the V.92 standard? Was the box actually marked V.92 or was it some kind of other modem?

The reason I ask is that I was under the impression that one was not limited in the amount of time one could talk (using the V.92 standard) and still maintain an internet connection.

All of the v.92 features are subject to your ISP choices. First ISP must have modems/software that support the feature. If they do, they determine how long the line will be maintain when you choose to put your ISP line on "Hold ". It can range upto "infinite ", but this would be costly to your ISP. Take a look look at this
site. Can answer many of the basic question.

PS... Will look up model and features for the modem I used. Will post back with info.
