Seems like a simple question, but I've searched and can't find an answer: How can I tell -- like with a popup or a ding! sound -- that Windows has finished booting, so I can use my PC without interrupting the booting process? Seems like Windows should have some built-in indicator that says, "Good to go!" or something like that. Any software or suggestions to make that work? Thanks!

Just keep an eye on the hard drive light - when that is only flickering occasionally or off 7 is up and running.

    Pete,

Thanks. Yes, that's a practical way to tell that the system is ready to go. However, I was kind of hoping for a more visible/audible alert, so I could do something else during the 3-4 minutes the system is booting and return to the PC when I hear the ding or see the popup.

I know of nothing in terms of software that would provide the alert you require and do not recall the question being asked before :)

For my part I come down in the morning, boot the computer, put on the kettle, log on, make the coffee by which time it is up and running and it stays booted up all day.

    Pete,

That's kind of what I do too, first thing in the morning. But when you have to reboot the computer multiple times, as for instance when you're installing or uninstalling programs, troubleshooting, using Safe Mode, System Restore, etc., it does get tiresome just sitting and watching the screen time after time.

BTW, this question is just a "nice to have," not a must have. So I'll let it go at this point. Thanks for your replies. :) If no more hits in a day or two, I'll mark it "Resolved. "

In Windows XP, networking is the last Windows service/program to load at boot. If have the adapter set to always show its icon in the system tray, you can visibly see when the boot cycle has completed.

Technically though, after one logs in, and explorer.exe loads (desktop & its icons) in XP or any other Windows operating system, the Windows boot cycle has completed, and the computer may be used immediately.

Very often, other software is set to load at boot time & may delay one's use of the computer until it has fully loaded. Examples are antivirus, antispyware, aol, skype, control panel applets, Windows update, manufacturer's software, etc.

    http://www.Soluto.com ?

As your computer is booting up, the bottom left corner of the Windows Desktop is turned up a bit so Soluto can show you what is being loaded and how long it's taking.

(For me, I throw a shortcut to IE in the Startup folder. So as soon as I see "the 'net ", as far as I'm concerned, it's booted. :))

    Thanks, TonyT and SpywareDr!

If I read your posts correctly, I believe that if I set my Firefox browser to open at every boot by putting a shortcut to it in the Startup folder, then when I see Firefox open, I will know that my system is fully loaded and ready to use. I'll give it a try and let you know.

When you "see" the desktop you can start working... some things will load in the background, but you'll not "interrupt" anything...

It worked. After rebooting, when Firefox appeared I could see by the HD activity LED that the PC was at idle and ready to use. Thanks all for your help.
