[Inactive] start up slow-now stalled and lost my desktop

    as suggested from : http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-7...-lost-my-desktop-no-restore-points-found.html

    Background for this problem:

(see update below) This computer is only a year old. Only one user, me. I was at Starbucks when this happened. Lats device attached was a printer/scanner via usb one day before trouble happened. No new software or hardware added recently. I stay current with my antivirus and have all updates on auto.

I was online for a few minutes but it was slow and hung up. I rebooted and start up was REAL slow and when it came back, it was all different and all my desktop items were gone. I did a safe mode to try to do a system restore, safe mode was slow but came up. But there was NO restore points to be had

I tried a few things, at one point I got "Failure to display and shut down options" The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when Ctl Alt Del was pressed. If the OS dpes not respond, presss esc or restart using power switch.

The Sys restore error said " sys restore does not seem to be functioning correctly on the sys... A shadow copy service componet encountered an unexpected error. Check the application event log for more info (0x80042302)

I looked that error up and found a few choice fixes, then I got another error at startup repair that said "if you recently attached a device to this computer ... etc... remove it and restart your computer... If you continue to see this message contact you sys admin...

then I did a cmd chkdsk and took a picture of the results... last line said "errors found. chkdsk cannot continue in read only mode.

I was in safe mode again and I removed the last installed program I had... but it was there a month before all this happened so I am sure thats not it. I did a few scans under troubleshooting, but nothing worked.

In the end I just did a final reboot back to normal mode... it said it was configuring my computer, then said it can't configure changes and ran a while then started up, when I put in my password, it sits on the "windows" work witrh the hour glass for a long long time (same as it has been doing since this issue) and then comes up to the desktop with none of my stuff, but some old and some newer icons. I dont see my pictures or iTunes music (but the icon is there).
I am also getting something weird in the bottom right corner of the screen... it says "This copy of Windows is not genuine" ???????? What ?

The only thing I can say that might matter is that I do carry the laptop alot. BUT I have a padded bag that is for computers and is beefy. And only in and out of car to Starbucks! Not walking around and such. But did I bump the memory out of it or something?? It seems to have some of its memory but not all?

I do have access to a PC to help resolve this issue with your guidence. I don't know what to do from here. If you think you can help, please advise.

update when posting this in this Malware removal forum

now I went to start as suggested on the Malware scan... but the last thing I had going was trying to make a back file per suggested screen on the computer at the time. I believe it was under restore?? Anyway it sat on a bar "Making" the file... for hours, never changing/showing movement, so I hard reboot yet again. Now it started up and has been sitting on:

    "Preparing to configure windows "

"Do not turn off your computer "

for oh about... 12 hours now, the circle is moving around.

Note: I am NOT in safe mode and since this original problem happened everything I ask it to do takes a long, long, long time. Yesterday it did this and the desktop came back up after like 1 hour, so I am not sure if I should keep it loading or not? or???

I can tell you that yesterday when I was in safe mode, things clicked and moved faster, not normal fast, but way better. So what do you suggest I do now??

    Please, observe following rules:
    • Read all of my instructions very carefully. Your mistakes during cleaning process may have very serious consequences, like unbootable computer.
    • If you're stuck, or you're not sure about certain step, always ask before doing anything else.
    • Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those I suggest.
    • Never run more than one scan at a time.
    • Keep updating me regarding your computer behavior, good, or bad.
    • The cleaning process, once started, has to be completed. Even if your computer appears to act better, it may still be infected. Once the computer is totally clean, I'll certainly let you know.
    • If you leave the topic without explanation in the middle of a cleaning process, you may not be eligible to receive any more help in malware removal forum.
    • I close my topics if you have not replied in 5 days. If you need more time, simply let me know. If I closed your topic and you need it to be reopened, simply PM me.

    ==============================================================

Let's see, if we can look at your computer booting from an external source.

Please download OTLPE (filesize 120,9 MB)

    • When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
    • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
      • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
    • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
    • Depending on your type of internet connection, you should be able to get online as well so you can access this topic more easily.
    • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
    • When asked Do you wish to load the remote registry, select Yes
    • When asked Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning, select Yes
    • Ensure the box Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
    • OTL should now start.
    • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
    • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
    • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
    • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

I got the CD in and set computer to boot from CD, you hear the CD start up, see a quick reboot failed, then I get the "system did not shutdown properly... do you want to reboot normal mode or safe mode mode?" It ran in safe mode first and I got to my logon, but then it got hung up sitting on the "welcome" screen before I realized I shouldn't be in safe mode.

Now I rebooted and let it go normal and it went to "Preparing to configure windows" "Do not turn off your computer" again but after a minute it went to "Failure configuring windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" circle is moving.

This has been going for about 10 minutes... Now what? Do I let it run and for how long?

See if you can boot another working computer with the CD you just created.

My 1st CD I did was done on my daughters laptop and I see the file on the CD after burned, but I cant get hers to reboot because her laptop is booting saying "needs run repair" and I see she has the thing sooo maxed out for space, I think it would be a nightmare to clean hers up and I don't want to wait for her to do it. Can this be done using our desktop running Windows XP? I tried to burn a new CD to try, but I can't get it to burn to the CD, although I do know the burner works and have tried a few different CD's. I click the .exe file, it extracts and asks if I want to burn... then it opens ImgBurn and shows the file and such, but the disc to write is not highlighted and the bottom corner says device not ready, Medium not present. If it can work on XP, how would I know if it boots to CD? By seeing the display REATOGO?

I cant get it to write on a new CD. Can I use a USB to boot from?

OK I did boot from a USB Flash... YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I first see Toshiba, then starting REATOGO-X-PE bar, then Windows XP (?? I have Windows 7 but made the flash drive on the XP) then it goes right to the blue screen saying:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical information:

    Stop: 0x0000007B (0xF78DA528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Thanks for the flash instructions, I do not know why the CD did not work, but I did not trust it was a problem with the computer that I used to burn it.

I will wait for my next instruction from you.

It doesn't matter. You're booting from an external OS, which has nothing to do what is actually installed on your computer.

However if we can't access your computer even from an external source you must be dealing with some other issues.
    Possibly hardware failure.

There is not much I can do in this forum :(

Thanks for you help broni!! I undertand how limiting it can be to work via a forum. I took your que and gave it to a Pro who could physically look at, it isn't a hard drive failure :) It booted up via a CD running ubuntu and we are recovering the files now. Then we will wipe it out and start fresh. Thanks so much for you time and efforts!!
