I've been using IE 8 on a Windows 7 64 bit machine for more than a year now, but last week the back button started to work only about 60% of the time.

The other 40% of the time hitting the back button does nothing.

I'm aware that I can reset IE, but I'd rather not have to do that because I'd lose all my cookies and remembered passwords for a lot of websites.

Is there another solution I can try to restore full back button functionality?

    Thanks!

There are some sites that are designed to not let you click the back button. Are you having problems with sites you visit all the time?

It's about 30-40% of the sites now -- although I will say most of the back button problems occur when I go to memeorandum.com and click on various news stories, finish them, and then try to click back to the news list.

I should double check that it's not just memorandum's problem. Duh.

    Thanks!

Hi dkline. You could try upgrading to Internet Explorer 9 and see if the issue gets resolved.

But like Steve said, there are websites that sometimes won't let you go back using the back button.

I'd be happy to use 9 except I couldn't figure out how to make it look exactly like IE8 -- some issue with the search bar and results no working the same way.

I'll check to see if the problem exists at the regular news sites I go to.

    Thanks.

I think the problem just exists on my memeorandum.com home page, and I can get around that by setting that page's references to open links in a new window.

Thanks for your help as always, guys.

IE 8 is not as secure as IE 9 is. That is why it was updated. You can make the 9 look almost exactly like 8 does. Just takes a little tweaking.

Thanks. Eventually, of course, I know that I'll have to migrate to IE9 and beyond.

Instead of Left clicking on the BACK BUTTON, try right clicking and then left click on what you want. Seen that work before.
