Greetings -- Some questions about buying an 'upgrade package' that will upgrade Vista to Win7 Home Basic.... I did read about this on the MS website, but I wanted to hear from someone who'd done it before:

1.) MS says that the upgrade package gives you the option of a.)Upgrading Vista in place, or b.)Installing a clean from-scratch installation. I'd like to do option-B. Does the upgrade DVD somehow have to verify that Vista [was] present, before you reformat the disk & install 7?

2.) Follow-on from #2... After everything's up and running with win7, and it's properly activated, lets says my HD dies, and I have to re-install from scratch. Will the Upgrade DVD work for this? If it has to verify presence of Vista before it installs, it won't succeed, because Vista's not there anymore.

3.) How does the Upgrade DVD verify that you're kosher in using the upgrade package, versus the full commercial package?

Please note: My reasons for these questions, is that I want to know that I can re-install W7 from scratch, if the disk dies, and whether I can do this with the Upgrade DVD...

I think I have Win7 Home Premium, not home Basic. --I'm at work at the moment -- I can't check. I see that the Basic version is quite basic!

Thanks for the link to that Install-from-bare-metal document, I think it fits the bill!

Permit me a potentially idiotic question? TigerDirect has "Windows 7 Home Premium OEM DVD" for sale. Now, Staples sells "Windows 7 Home Premium Full Version DVD" for $20 more.

These packages seem similar if not identical in feature/function. Do I buy the $7 red marble, or the $10 red marble?

I use TigerDirect all the time. I use OEM discs from them and never had any problems. Staples is retail version of the OS.

A quick google search suggests that OEM is tied to the system you initially install the OS onto whereas Retail will allow you to reinstall on other systems (obviously once uninstalled on the older system) and be entitled to MS Support.

Others here can probably clarify that a bit better.

Yes. That is exactly the difference between the two versions. The Activation process takes a signature from the key system components - particularly the MOBO and processor but also graphics card, DVD drive etc - and registers them with microsoft as the original PC. Then if activation is attempted from a different MOBO and processor it will fail. Reactivation will also be required if more than four pieces of hardware are changed in one go. Hope that makes sense...

So, WildFire says that the OEM version can be activated on one single system, and once that happens, it can only ever be re-installed on that same system. I think this would fit what I'm doing -- I only want W7 on that one system; all other systems in my house already have W7 on them. Plus, there's no MS support bundled with the OEM version - which is why it costs slightly less?

Also, which Vista do you have? You can't 'downgrade' the version with an upgrade, meaning you can't 'upgrade' Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Home (or anything other then W7 Ultimate).

Good point -- I do have the 'base' version of Vista.. Vista Home maybe? --I'm at work now; I'm not near the system.. I think I'm OK though. I've decided to go with OEM, for a lower price. I won't be re-installing on other HW, and MS support is not an issue.

I think I made a mistake with OEM.. Microsoft made me sign up for the Microsoft Partner Network - and I "m just a regular Joe -- I'm not a business.. Now I feel like I've defrauded Microsoft. Plus now, I have to deal with this OEM Prep Kit (OPK), and jump thru a bunch of hoops with. I would have gladly paid the extra $20 to get the regular version of Windows, versus spending an entire Saturday figuring out how to do this..... I think I made a big mistake.

Did you go through the Windows Anytime Upgrade procedure on your computer?

I didn't do an Anytime-Upgrade, because I wanted to wipe everything, and start from scratch -- keeping nothing. I "ve printed out a quik-deploy procedure that uses that uses that 2GB download -- the deployment tools. It's an .IMG file that I need to burn to a DVD (then install back to the computer that will be running the quick-deployment app)
