I am using Windows 7. I had created a JPG file weeks ago using MS Paint. However, now, every time I launch it, it keeps coming up with that image that I am over and done with, instead of a blank canvas. How do I stop this? All I want is a blank canvas without having to open up File | New each time. I tried saving the file with the old image hoping it would go away, to no avail. And, I cannot erase what is currently on the canvas!! Just humor it, I made some changes to the image and saved it. However, when I go into it now, it displays the same image, complete with the changes I just made! :( I am using the launcher from within Accessories.

Open RegEdit and get to the key

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint\Recent File List

Check if the default file name is the file name of your image. If so, open the registry key and delete the filename from the default entry so that it becomes value not set.

Another thing.... A variation on SpywareDr's suggestion. Click Start > Accessories then Right Click on the Paint shortcut and select properties. Check that the shortcut is %windir%\system32\mspaint.exe and doesn't contain a switch to load the default image.

Yes, it does. I tested that from the command line - same thing.

dnmacleod, thank you! I went into the registry but there was nothing specified for the default file. Thereafter, I tried your second suggestion, going into the actual shortcut, which was pointing to the offending file, indeed! Removed the argument. Problem resolved. My visit here has been very rewarding, thanks to you all.
