I have a dell laptop with windows xp on it sp3. The last 3 months everytime i restart the laptop everything loads fast except for the wireless network the computer sits idle for about a minute then the network loads, after everything works fine when i am waiting for the network to load the security warning comes up telling me that my windows firewall is not running than the network starts to load and the warning goes away the firewall is then on. Any help with this please:confused:

Try shuting everything off. Modem, router, and PC. then turn on the Modem and let it settle down, usually about a minute. Then do the Router the same way. Then turn on the PC. If it is a Modem/Router, when it settles down, do the PC. Sometimes a reboot of everything will cure weird problems.

Check out what software might be involved with loading your wireless/network (pretty much the same thing).

If software can't find the things it needs quickly, it slows the system down.

Software...are the programs you see turning up in the Notification Tray when you log on. It seems you are watching them already.

You know it is a network connection problem. What is controlling your network connection? I would investigate that/those.

PS: Also consider that it could be due to malware.

Try uninstalling the Dell software (in Add or Remove Programs). The Dell software will be a "network manager ", the drivers are the system that allow the hardware to work, they are not the same, although computer manufacturers muddle the descriptions.

Test run without the network manager, Windows can control the networks, but it might not "automatically connect" like a network manager would.

If you don't have success, reinstall the Dell software (network manager). When you reset your connection it could start working correctly then.

I have found that the usual causes of wired or wifi network connection delays at startup to be:

(in no particular order of importance)

    1. security software loads prior to networking and tries to begin network monitoring.

    2. antivirus loads priorly and tries to update or monitor LAN/WAN connections.

    3. other software loads first and tries to connect, e.g. skype, messaging software, p2p clients.

    4. other software loads first and tries to check for updates, e.g. adobe products, antivirus, antispyware, OEM (manufacturer) updates such as HP, Compaq, etc. have update software loading at boot.

    5. malware.

    TonyT,

assuming I have no malware, how do you stop the programs from loading before the network loads.

You can't do that easily in Windows, unless you use a 3rd party utility to control the order of program loading.

To do it on your own, you'd need to remove the registry values for such programs, then use a script that loads desired programs 1x1 with delays in between if necessary. This can be burdensome if have full blown IUnternet security suites that load 8-10 different components. Get the idea that the antivirus auto-protect does not load and now a Security Center throws up alerts.
