After shutting down my PC and then turning it back on the next day, I find that my color quality setting (32-bit) has automatically changed to 8-bit. Where would be the first place to find why?

Assuming you are referring to the system listed in your specs I'd visit ATI's website and download the latest drivers for your Radeon.

If I was to suspect a driver problem, why did it start acting up with the old driver when it has worked well before? Does the driver go bad? I know that updates to driver occur to enhance the product and or solve problems but the old driver was working okay.

Your current drivers apparently got corrupt. I would check the hard drive for errors before attempting to reinstall old or updated drivers. Start\Run, type in chkdsk /f and press Enter. Type a Y in the command prompt window that will appear to confirm this action. Then reboot to let it happen.

It could also be that Windows Updates made changes to Windows System files and those changes 'forced' an update in the way other software (drivers) interact with them. That's one of the reasons drivers get updated.

Did a chkdsk with no bad sectors, reinstalled updated driver (same as installed) with same effect upon restart. Color Quality drops from 32 bit to 8 bit.

Reinstalled updated driver? Do you mean you went to ATI's site and installed the latest driver?

Well first let me correct one thing. I am working off my backup CPU which has the same OS as the one described in My System but uses a NVidia GForce 9500. I did go to their Website to download the latest driver which I had already installed. All my systems use FileHippo to alert me on updates.

Did you reinstall it? The one you have could be corrupted.

Hi joe645, just a query - did you un-install the "old/corrupt" driver before installing the updated one?
Most Graphics driver manufacturers require the old drivers to be removed before installing new ones. Neil.

My next choice would be to change the 9200 graphics card. I had a lot of fun with one of those a couple of years ago. Neil.

Funny thing . . . When I restart the CUP and the desktop come up, the icon descriptions have white background and the wallpaper is diffused (8bit). I could go to Control Panel and change the settings or, I found that if I go to the NVidia Control Panel initiate it, the settings appear normal.

I'm a little confused here. Your Post#7 states you are using your backup CPU?
Your last Post states you started your CUP?

CPU (Central Processing Unit) CUP = ?
You have a Radeon 9200 Graphics card in your System Details - Radeon = ATI?
If you have Nvidia drivers installed - you will have a problem.

Please let us know what is correct in your system. Neil.

ATI launched the Radeon in 2000. AMD aquired it in 2006.

See Post #13 DR. I know ATI / AMD connection, but Nvidia is different ball game. Neil.

Sorry about that fellows, CUP was a typo. I have 2 CPU's. The one I am having difficulty with has a NVidia 9500 card. I have queried NVidia for answers but have yet to come up with a solution. Anymore help here or should I look elsewhere? Thanks for the replies so far.

Hi joe645, I take it when you say CPU you are referring to your PC (Personal Computer)?
I seem to recollect there was some conflict with AMD CPU's and certain graphic cards.
I think it would pay for you to be very specific with FULL details of your faulty computer so that Help will be of value. Can you please do this? Neil.
