I have been asked to look at a laptop that is running Vista as an operating sysytem. On start up a warning saying that the system event Notification service is not working. When I go into system event service it says that it is unavailable and asks if the service is running. This all started when the ISATAP network adapter stopped working and now I cannot connect to the internet even if I use a wired connection. Can anyone help me please!!

    Try disabling IPv6
    http://www.home-network-help.com/disable-ipv6.html
I had to disable it on mine.

Otherwise try getting ISATAP working again. Where do you see it "stopped working "? In Device Manager? Look at finding updated drivers/software or uninstalling and reinstalling the original ones.

See if Event Notification starts working after that.

You might want to try doing a System Restore to before the problem started.

    Hi Mattman,
Thanks for your advice. I did what you said but when I go into network connections there is nothing listed at all. What does this mean and how do I sort it.
    Thanks again for your help

    Mattman,
It was in device manager that there is an yellow exclamation mark on the ISATAP and I know that Microsoft stopped using it in March 2010. In Device manager there is a Atheros wireless adapter shown and realtek fast inernet NIC show and appear ok (no exclamation marks)I'm a bit confused now but I can't do a wired connection to the internet so can't do any updates or to reload the driver for the ISATAP.
    Any ideas?????
    Thanks again

Forget ISATAP. Either remove (uninstall it) or Ignore it. It has no bearing on your problem.

I would start running a system file check:

    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start > All Programs > Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and click Run as administrator.
    2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect / corrupt / missing files.
