    Hi all,

I am running Windows 7 Professional x64. I am trying like hell to take all the videos I've shot (of kids, family, etc) over the years and organize it all. I'm looking to get your opinions on a software package I can use (free or otherwise) that will help me. A lot of the videos I have are huge (13+ GB). These are typically an hour long, but should be broken down into separate videos.

There a recommended software package for that?

I'd also like a software that will allow me to convert videos from one format to another. Would be nice if one software did it all...

My main desire is to keep the videos at the highest quality (preferably original) and do it all in a package that's pretty easy to use, as I am by no means a video production expert.

    Recommendations would be great! Thanks!

    Chris

I know Windows Live Movie Maker will let you split videos, although IIRC their output format is going to be WMV. I'm not sure if that's ok with you or not.

As far as converting, I've always used (for very light and amateur purposes) Any Video Converter. It will convert to numerous other formats, and will also give you an MP3 from the audio tracks in vidoes as well (just pick the output format option as MP3). It is incredibly simple---you just open up the program, select the output format, select the vidoe, and click on a button that says Convert.

Both are free; you might find pro programs give you a higher quality result. I know with WLMM that too much converting (the same video) affects picture quality.

Windows Live Movie Maker will let you trim and split videos.

Since it's free and since it's already installed on Windows 7 and it's highly rated on several review sites, it could very well be your best choice.

A good place to read up on its capabilities start on this page.

Thanks, guys. WMML seems like a good starting point. Playing now! I don't know about only being able to save in WMV, though... :-( I'll see how it looks. Will definitely be back, but for now... THANKS!

As a "paid for" program, Cyberlink Power Director is very good value for money. You get a 30 day trial - which should be enough for you to try it out properly. I've used it for some time now and got very good results with it. And you can save to multiple formats including upsampling to full HD - although upsampling is rarely very successful.
