I created 2 virtual drives and used them quite a bit for several days. Then I decided to restart the PC for various reasons and now neither one shows in the drive list and I can't figure out where they are or how to get them back.

Sidenote, IMHO, the new Win Explorer provided with Win7 has to the most ill-conceived, difficult to use, PitA MS ever came up with. I HATE IT.

If anyone can offer a 3rd party solution that gives me the control, access and functionality that was there in all previous versions, I am all ears...

What did you use to create these drives?

Well, when you create a VHD, 1st question asked is the location where you want the disk created. Standard location is in \Libraries\Documents.

You could also search your hard drive for the virtual hard disk file (.vhd).

Yes, the vhd's are still there but the drive letter is no longer assigned and the drives no longer show up in disk manager. I guess I was expecting that this process would have been on a more permanent basis - a suitable replacement for 3rd party apps that can re-partition a 'live' drive.

This VHD setup doesn't work in a production env. or for newbies.

No, this process isn't permanent. After each reboot you'll have to re-attach the VHD's.

So in Disk Management you choose Action > Attach VHD.

Now, there is a way to automate this.

    1. Create a new text file and enter diskpart /s c:\drives.txt as the contents
    2. Copy the file to the root of your C drive and rename it AttachVHD.cmd
    3. Now create a new text file named drives.txt and copy that to the root of your C drive
    4. For each VHD enter these lines in the drives.txt file:
      • select vdisk file= "path and name of VHD "
      • attach vdisk

Note that and example for select vdisk file would be:

    select vdisk file= "C:\Users\{User Name}\My Documents\Games.vhd "

Once you have done this, use my article Bypass UAC Prompt For Specific Application to schedule AttachVHD.cmd to be run automatically.

OK, thanks. I'll give it a try when I get some time.
