    Hi,
    Happy New Year

This PC is profiled (It is up-to-date) etc. Avast! 6.0.1289.

Unknowingly a folder I need (I'll call it "need ") was moved to "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484"
I cannot access "need" which under "properties" shows 0 - I get access denied, I've tried to change from partially "read-only" (The check box has the square filling (vs. a check mark))
Errors when I try to change the setting(s) also with "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484"
MS KB has an article "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881" - which I have tried but I don't have an option for file sharing (Tools | Folder Options | View | advanced)

I really don't want to mess things up further so if anyone has any advice please help!
BTW, I ran Avast! on the folder (“needâ€) (clean) and during scan it listed all the contents which are there

What did you use to put stuff in that folder? Word, Documents, or what?

    Hi
    Thanks for replying

    I used Word 2007 Home

Update: I copied the folder: "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484" but the "Need" folder was not copied.

    The contents of "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484" are:
    Need
    amd64
    i386

Hi tanya, just a thought - have you tried > Start > Control Panel > Appearance & Themes > Folder Options > View > under Hidden Files & Folders > click Show Hidden Files & Folders.
Does that give you access? Neil.

That folder is going to keep locking you out as long as you try anything through WinXp. You have three (easy?) possible solutions.
    1. Take the hard drive out and install into another working computer, and then copy the files.
    2. Create a BartPE CD (best described as windows running on a CD), and then boot up with it and copy your folder out of there.
    http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
    3. Create a Ubuntu installation CD, it will run like an OS just off of the CD without installing. Then copy your folder out of there. http://www.ubuntu.com/download

Friend just did this exact same thing. He finally opened them up through Word and then save them some place else. Then had no problem. Some how when he made the folder it was Read only and he could not change it.

    Thank you!
The good part is the only file I seem not to be able to access is the one I need (updated today)
    From search results:
It has a "missing shortcut "
It is in: D and C\[...]\Recent

What about changing attribute (or doing something) through DOS?

No idea why you put something in a temporary folder (if that's what you did) that is clearly a left-over from a Windows Update. Normally these are 'cleaned up' (i.e. deleted) after a reboot.

So again, please explain what/why you need anything from this folder.

    Interesting ....
The only thing I have done with this PC is the auto Updates (2 days ago). Wasn't there an update concerning a security risk in Word / Office?

    Difference:
I did not do anything. I restarted PC after using the file I do need (which now is gone) and the folder "need" was gone. I searched and found it in "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484" which was right next to the "need" folder's original location. "Need" is in "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484 ".

Last night I searched for the file I need (in "need ") I'll call it: "file" It came up but had missing shortcut. It was in "recent docs (D+C\[...]\Recent) "
    Now it has disappeared.

I tried and was not able to copy the folder: "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484" to a new flash - states it cannot copy the folder "need ". (I screen shot this - can I post a screen shot?)

What did your friend do? Since all I may have done is inadvertently moved "need" into "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484 "

    Thank you!

P.S. How did he open them up in word? I cannot - "Need" won't allow me?

What about changing attributes with DOS?

That is NOT what I did.
Used file -> ( "File" which was in Folder I am calling "Need ") (I saved as usual) Restated (cold boot)
Via Explorer the folder "Need" was gone: and "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484" was used most recently (I.E. view -> arrange icons by modified) I had NOT used "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484" consciously
Reason it had been used most recently, was b/c the folder "Need" had been put into it. (Unconsciously) May have moved it by mistake...
I apologize for sounding rude but where did you get the idea I had done anything with a temp file?

The folder "Need" has documents (files) e.g. "File" that I need. It is not in a temp folder (unless "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484" is a temp folder - is it?)
The other items in "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484" are:
    amd64
    and
    i386

What about DOS? Isn't there an attribute change? If so and you don't have time to explain, where can I find out the DOS syntax without destroying the entire PC?
    Thanks

Update (Not really an "UP ")
Tried command prompt (but this is under XP (I.E. programs | accessories | command prompt)
I can change directory (cd) to "131e7e52be2e5f724d775484" however, trying to CD to the folder "Need" gives "access denied" in the dos window.

How can I get a full DOS windows (and get out of it)

I want to thank everyone so far - I greatly appreciate any and all help!

    myFolder?

    MS-DOS?:

How do I get the DOS window?
Not the command prompt under programs | accessories | Command Prompt - which IIRC is DOS UNDER <the control of> Windows (XP in this case) but the DOS under DOS (like restart in DOS)

I may find it now when I reboot:

    Thanks

    Progress?
Not really but could someone please advise?

    I found this:
"File Access Denied on Windows XP and how to take ownership "
    http://brajeshwar.com/2005/file-access-denied-on-windows-xp-and-how-to-take-ownership/
"How to take ownership of a file or a folder in Windows XP "
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&Product=winxp

    1. The reason I could not find file sharing:
Is because this is Windows XP HOME. (Not Pro)

    2. Problem:
How does one tell which has log in privileges: admin or owner?
I tried the above in safe mode using my name (there were 2 options: Admin or Owner - used owner)
It did not solve things - a bit because now the folder has contents which are not accessible... Keep getting error: I don't have privilege

Concern is that I will lock myself out of the computer.
    I am the only user.

    On windows explorer: I have
"Documents and Settings" | All Users
    AND
    "Documents and Settings" | Owner

Could someone please advise what to do?
    Thanks

    Hi
    Resolved!

    Tried Safe Mode again:
    (Logged in as owner again)

Initially no effect but after redoing the steps from article ( "File Access Denied on Windows XP and how to take ownership ") "“ above - several times in safe mode the files eventually opened.
Copied folder to a flash drive (in safe mode)

The folder contents open in Normal Windows (As do other files I've tried)

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice!
    :)
