Lets define 'away'.... Lets say for several hours... like overnight or at the end of your work day.

The only thing that gets shut off here is the laptops. I never shut down the 3 desktops unless a reboot is required of an install, uninstall or an update. If I am going to be gone for more than a day, then they are shut down.
Monitors and Desktop take a nap after 5 minutes. Shake the mouse of strike a key and they are ready for some action. :D

If I expect to be away from my desktop computer for no more than a couple of hours, I leave it running, but turn off the monitor. Longer than that, it gets turned off.

I usually hibernate my laptop when it's on the port replicator, as it's getting power. Otherwise, I turn it off.

I always keep my computer on except whrn I leave Malta for a long holiday.

I choose to let it go into sleep mode after a set period of time

If I'm not going to be using the 'puter for awhile (it varies as far as time goes), I'll put it in StandBy mode. When I'm done for the day, I'll turn it off.

I turn monitor off when away for an hour or more. Always shut it down every evening.

If I am away from my computer for say more than about 2 hours at home then I Hibernate my system. That way when I come back I can turn it back on and resume my Windows session.

Since I am not using my computer for a while then there is no reason to leave it running while it wastes power so Hibernating it, is a good solution and it actually shuts off the system.

But sometimes I Shut Down the system completely instead of Hibernating it.

    monitor state

I usually turn off my laptop when I leave but was wondering if this is best way. I also wondered if I should leave it plugged in unless I go portable?

When I leave the house or go to bed my PCs are shutdown. I left my desktop running unattended once and walked in to see the power supply shooting out sparks and flames. It scorched my printer and caught the paper in it on fire. No more leaving any electronics running when not in use or I am not home.

I leave my PC on until late in the evening and allow Google Screensaver to run. I shut the PC down before bed. I have over a thousand nature photos taken by me during an extended trip to Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, and Canada. I was so surprised at their quality and beauty that I still like to recapture that wonderful experience through the screensaver...

Mine stay on 24 x 7. I don't like to wait on them to reboot. Although I did have an unexpected 3 1/2 months away from mine. I fell and broke my neck, fractured my skull, and fractured two ribs on 9/3/11. Just got back home 12/14/11.

Always shut down comps when not using/finished using. Whiskeyman said it all. Pensioner power bills are something we watch pretty closely. Merry Xmas to all. Neil.;)

Merry Christmas to all at Windows BBS.

My desktop remains on 24/7 and runs a Webshots screensaver.
I change the theme for the seasons, holidays, etc, and it's ready to go in an instant.

We all seem to like to run up our electricity bill!! There are times, though, that I must give my unfocussed ADHD brain a rest from any and all PC activities. I send blessings and greetings this wonderful Christmas Season...

As long as I have been in computers, I still don't know which is better - sleep mode or hybernation. So I let it go into screen saver, then do whatever that power down mode does, and wake it when I'm ready.
Laptops get to go to sleep right away.

    Happy Holidays All!

    MisQuoted!

I got this in your (Win BBS') email:
"lynn1102 has just replied to a thread you have subscribed to entitled - When I'm away from my computer, it is usually: - in the PC Hardware forum of Windows BBS. "

This is not what I said, as you can see from the above quote from me.
I don't leave my computers connected to this forum, or collection of fora. That wouldn't be wise, as it would make it even easier to hack into my system.

I let them go to sleep. or what ever they do when the screen saver stops, and they go blank; the laptops get turned to sleep mode the minute I am finished using them.

I hope this gets reproduced correctly.

You have some super smart people here, and I appreciate being able to tap into their collective intelligence when/if necessary.

But it would be nice to see what I have said quoted properly and exactly.

    Merry Merry!
    -a.
