Yes they would show up. Most people are smart enough not to make LD Calls. Just use it for calling their friends. Like I said earlier, it is easy to find. Been there done that several times.

Me again. I may have solved the problem! Well the modem problem anyway. The phone line continues to go on and off, but I've got some good information here on how to deal with the phone company.

Another bulletin board where I didn't mention I had CA AV/firewall said that could well be the problem as it takes up so many resources. I noticed under task manager and CA event manager was running. I shut it off. Now no problem. I've used CA for years and never got a virus or malware, but that program has been a pain. So when my subscription runs out or even before then, I'll load up my computers, drive to town, and get another program. I'll do my research before then.

So thanks to you both. I feel now like I can begin to live life again without thinking about computers all day. I love/hate computers.

    When my subscription expires

So you going to leave yourself unprotected just to get on line?

I think I've found a solution! It's been sitting on my book shelf for some time. I took the A+ certification course in 1999, and dial-up modems are about the same.

I looked at the modem log. It was doing one thing low when it should have been high and vice versa. So I went into the advanced tab, port settings, and played with the transmit and receive speed and am not disconnecting!

The phone company moved our line, but now we are on a noisy line which they promised to fix.

Then I learned something I'd like to pass on because it burns me up!!!

We have used Earthlink since the early 90s. Back then they had great tech support. Now it is in India. I pay $22/month for service.

I decided to switch and surfed around.

Now for $10/month I get the same service from an ISP THAT IS US-BASED WITH US-BASED TECH SUPPORT.

I save $12/month and use a company that employs Americans. Now that is a deal!

That service offers high-speed as well; and, hopefully, in 2015 when Arkansas is to be totally high-speed, I'll use that service. It would be so wonderful to have American tech support for everything computer related.

Our EL account expires in a week. I will write a letter to the corporate people and blast them. We had EL so long I never looked around at anything else. This new company installed a dialer that always closed the browser on hang up. I didn't like that so I called, got an AMERICAN, and boom - everything was the way I wanted it.

I fear buying a new desktop because of tech support. Most things - certainly not all - I can handle or research. My fingers are crossed my new laptop isn't a problem.

So if anyone knows of a computer mfg. with American tech support, please let me know.

I know India is still poor and an emerging economy. I can't fault anyone in the world for trying to earn a living. But Americans, too, need to earn a living.

Sorry - political/economic rant. I will write EL via US mail and purge my anger.
