I'm having a problem with IE 6.0 hanging for 3 or 4 minutes. I'm running Windows ME and have tried disabling all unnecessary programs at start-up, I constantly clear my cache and temp files, but to no avail. I can be at a website and it will simply stop communicating. If I use Netscape, I don't have the problem. I do have a NIC card, but have disabled it from start-up. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Thanks Mike - It sure makes sense given that I don't have the problem when using Netscape (which I hardly ever use except for "emeregencies "). I do have SpyBot Search & Destroy, but will download your other recommendations as well.

Make sure to update Spybot. And run it twice in a row delete everything it finds. It will leave some things, not let you delete them.

When you run EasyClean unnessesary files put the word help in the skip. Don't do the duplicate files, to hard to tell which system files to keep. And on the start menu cleanup just don't force anything it wants to keep.

In RegCleaner look carefully on the page for any previously uninstalled programs that you know for sure are gone and tag and delete. Then go to tools-registry-do them all.

Only after cleaning do the win update.

Hope you have broadband. This could take a while with a modem!

Did you "disable in this hardware profile" in Device Manager?

Mine seems to be working ok now. When I do get the pauses, I think it is my ISP doing it. It happens a lot less with the on board NIC disabled.

Well, I installed and ran everything that Mike suggested, but am still getting the hang-ups. They usually last about 3 or 4 minutes and then suddenly, it takes off. Sometimes I can surf without any problems for 10-15 minutes, and then it acts up again.

I also followed Bmoore1129's suggestion to disable the NIC card in the hardware profile, but I'm still getting these hang-ups.

Don't think it's an ISP problem, as I have two different ones I use. It hangs regardless of which one I'm dialed into. Like I mentioned in my first post, I don't have any problems when using Netscape or Opera....just IE 6. I have the latest patches installed and have tried to repair it, but nothing seems to matter. Is there a way I can completely remove it from my system and reinstall it from scratch? I don't have the option of reverting to a previously installed version. I'm not sure what else I can do. I appreciate any feedback.

    Thanks!

    OK Judy

    You did good!

Do this now. Connect to internet then go to start run and type

    winipconfg >ipconfg.txt

Then find the file it created (ipconfg.txt) load it with word or wordpad copy it and paste it back to us.

Then start programs msdos command prompt
    when there, again type
    winipcfg
at the bottom of this screen click release all then click renew all.
    exit winipcfg
    type exit to leave dos
    hangup modem
reboot and retest for the problem

If problem is fixed it would be good to do next step, if not fixed then nessesary to next step.

It is now time to do the Windows Update. This will be time consuming on a modem.

You should get them all especially the Critical Updates and IE and Outlook Express update.

Do not get Critical update Notification nor anything with .net.

This is the next logical step and your system will be better off even if this still does not fix the problem.

If the winipcfg does not clear the problem we will try this last thing before removing IE.

IE can not be uninstalled in the normal way, but it can be done.

But before we do that there is 1 more cleanup that could help.

You will need a win98 boot floppy. If you can get someone who has win98 to format a disk and include the system files otherwise an empty disk.

Then send me a personal email at mflynn@lexcominc.net and I will return by attachment a batch program that does a deeper clean. It will clear the windows swapfile, shellicon cache, fastfind and several other potential problem files.

All you will need to do is save this file on the floppy then execute the file and reboot with the floppy and it will do the cleaning.

    Hi Mike:

Thanks for the extra help. I ran the winipcfg command and here is the output:

    Windows IP Configuration

    0 Ethernet adapter :

    IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . :

    1 Ethernet adapter :

    IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 216.237.68.23
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . : 216.237.68.23

I released and renewed as instructed. However, when I go to download the critical updates (takes forever at 26.4bps due to my remote location), I then receive an error installing them. Something to the effect of "windows is unable to process the updates." I'll keep working on that glitch and will let you know how everything goes. So far, so good....no hang time in the last half hour or so.

Thanks again for all your help,

    Judy

Disable third party browser extensions (Tools - Internet Options - Advanced), run IE's Repair Tool and see whether there's any improvement.

    Good morning Judy

    How did update go?

I knew it would be a long time on a modem!

It is the next logical step. I hope it fixed your problem.
