In XP you could Ctrl+leftclick on multiple windows in the task bar, then from there close them.

This doesn't work in Windows 7.

    Can it be enabled?

Do you mean open more than one window from the Taskbar?

After opening one window you can either Shift+left click on the same Icon or Ctrl+N.

Either right click on the taskbar icon and select close or hover the mouse over it for a preview window where the close button is active.

I don't think that's the same as what i'm asking about... for example in XP if you have Grouping disabled, you can ctrl+click on four different windows in let's say Notepad, then right-click on any of them and select close, which closes all four. 7 doesn't do this. Selecting multiple is not possible using Ctrl.

Right clicking offers a close all windows and hovering brings up a miniature window for each active one where the individual close buttons apply.

    Nope.
Tried right clicking in various areas including the preview pane that comes up - not an option.

That's the consequence of disabling grouping. Guess Microsoft didn't find in necessary to have that functionality carry over from Windows XP.

There's a small application called CloseAll that will add the functionality you want.

It's free. If the above link doesn't work for you, Google it. It's widely available.
