I tried to do a microsoft update and got this message: [Error number: 0x800A01CE]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

I am also noticing a message that comes up everytime I try to install something: Windows Installer cannot access the file or is not installer correctly. I manually have to start the insatller in the services tab. When I re-boot the computer it takes a long time to shut down and restart. I posted to this forum not to long ago because I was having similar issues with windows installer not working. It was working then but it is not now.

    Hi Jobin1.

Follow these steps to resolve the problem:

    Step 1

Check whether the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is set to Manual or Automatic.

    1. Click Start< then Run.

    2. When the run box opens type services.msc and hit enter.

    3. After the services window opens check whether the Background Intelligent Transfer Service is set to Manual or Automatic.

    4. If not set then right click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service and select properties and select Automatic or Manual in the drop down box under Startup type. Click Ok to close the window.

    5. Check whether you are able to update Windows XP. If the issue is not resolved proceed to step 2.

    Step 2

Reinstall Windows Script and check whether the issue is resolved.

    1. Windows Script 5.7 for Windows XP.

    2. After Windows Script has been installed reboot the computer and then check if you can update Windows XP successfully.

A friend of mine is having the same problem with Win7 Pro 64-bit. Will the same fix work for it?

Yes, Step 1 should hopefully resolve the problem for Windows 7. Also check to make sure that the Automatic Updates/Windows Update service is set to Automatic and is Started.

You won't be able to perform Step 2 though since that only applies to Windows XP.

He tried it and got no difference. Still unable to install or uninstall anything, including Windows Updates. Thanks anyway.

Thank you, Dr. I've given him your links and your advice to open an e-mail issue with Microsoft. :)

I consider my part of this thread Solved, but I won't close it (unless instructed to) because the other party has not yet replied.

You can't, even if you wanted; it is not your thread. You should have started a new thread.

Are you using a 3rd party firewall on your computer? Have you tried shutting down your antivirus program and then checking if you can connect to the Windows Update website?

I would try resetting the Windows Update components and then see if you can get Windows Update to work, How do I reset Windows Update components?

Setup has detected that the service pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update.

When you ran the Microsoft Fix It Tool that was the error message that you got from it? Thats strange that it doesn't want to run. Does the computer have SP3 installed?

In that case follow the steps in the link that I posted and where it says Let me fix the problem myself, run through the steps manually in the Microsoft article.

Ok then. Go ahead and instead of downloading the Fixit Tool, run through the steps in the Microsoft KB article in post number 12. Under the Let me Fix It Myself section of the article, follow the instructions to reset Windows Update manually.

You shouldn't receive an error message like that at all since the manual steps don't involve you running the Microsoft FixIt Tool. I quoted the steps for you that you need to follow from the Microsoft KB article.
