Themepaks downloaded from Microsoft sites will not "run" or "install ". Original themes work fine. Error message indicates that the themepak file does not have any application association to open, run, or install. Any help appreciated.

Which version of 7 are you using?

Additionally the exact error message could be useful.

The instructions on the Microsoft site are to click on "Open" then on "Run. "

Are you trying to save them first, then run them?

I don't think that's an issue Miz, just tried both methods and installation went smoothly, however if the OP doesn't have at least Home Premium then theme packs wont work

Am using Windows 7 Home Premium. Have tried both methods also. Rusults negative. BTW this function worked when I first installed Win 7 and has just stopped recently.

    So what's changed recently?

Try a system restore back to when it was working.

Used oldest restore available (6 months ago). No change in ability to install downloaded themepaks from MS website. Is there a quick/easy way to repair the win 7 installation itself?

Ran "scannow "... again. Same results as before. I can download and save to desktop but cannot install. Can attempt to open after download but will not install. Still get pop-up dialogue box stating "cannot open...not assocaiated with any program..etc ".

As stated in previous post, this process had worked without error for some time after installing Windows 7 in November 2009. All updates and patches are installed.

Wildfire, you are simply GOOD! The thread in the link you recommended contained answers and ultimately I was able tofixed my themepack problem. Someway, I had string extra variables and was missing the necessary string variables. Repaired my registry with the modifications recommended, rebooted, and downloaded a themepack from MS Windows web site. Windows recognized, open, and installed the theme without a glitch. Problem solved!!

Thanks to all who provided welcome assistance and advice.

Glad you got it sorted but I think the credit here belongs to Grzegorz Krzymiński.

Agree! But.... you knew where his information resided and how to get to it. I would still be floundering around if left on my own.
Again, thanks to all who assisted.
