My computer is an AMD Phenom II X4 955 with 3 GB of RAM. The BIOS is an American Megatrends Inc. V18.0 12/31/2010. The MOBO is an 890FXA-GD65 (MS-7640) 3.0. The OS is Windows XP Home, Sp3 with all updates.

Except for one thing, everything is normal. Recently I noticed that the screen is black during bootup. There is a short splash advertisement for the MOBO, which has always been there, but other than that there is no indication of BIOS activity. Then Windows comes on and all is well.

I can blindly press DEL during the bootup process and get to the BIOS if necessary, but it is sort of hit and miss as you can imagine.

What has happened and how do I fix it?

Hi sdculp. I've had this same issue with the BIOS screen on my new HP computer that I purchased and upgraded earlier this year.

In order for me to get into the BIOS at all, I only have about a 1 second chance to enter the BIOS before my computer boots into Windows. In the BIOS see if there is a setting where you can change the delay time that you can set before the computer boots into Windows.

If there is no delay time you can set (like in my computers BIOS) then there should be an option that says Enable/Disable Fast Boot. That option should be set to Disabled to allow you more time to enter the BIOS before booting into Windows if needed.

Thanks for the info. Based on your ideas, I got to playing around with things and got a solution, although it is a bit mysterious.

I made sure there was a 2 second time delay in the boot.ini.

I got into the BIOS and saw that "quick boot" was enabled. AHA!, I thought. So I changed it to full boot and rebooted. Got lots of stuff. Then I went back into the BIOS and reenabled quick boot to see what would happen and it worked fine only with a somewhat reduced boot activity. While I was at it, I disabled the mother board splash screen advertisement.

So now everything works fine and the splash screen is gone.
