I want to migrate from Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. This will necessitate a clean install. Does this mean I will need the full version of Windows 7 vs. the upgrade addition?

You can upgrade from Vista 32 to Windows 7 64 as long as (MrBill pointed out) you have the necessary hardware.

You need to go to Start/Computer (or My Computer) (don't know what it is called in Vista) then right click on Computer and left click Properties and it should tell you.

I'm aware that I can upgrade. According to the Windows upgrade advisor I will need to perform a clean install, which requires a HD format. It is also my understanding that there are 2 versions Of each Windows 7 package- a full standalone package- and an upgrade package. Since I'm formatting my hard drive I'm assuming I will need the full version as the upgrade won't know that there was any software on the drive previously?

MrBill, the upgrade has both 32bit & 64Bit OS's so the hardware isn't really an issue unless Gmatt must have the 64bit version.

TBH I've never done this but I'd imagine you'd need either the Vista Key or a Vista CD, at the very least the upgrade should perform a check for validation before formatting.

EDIT: This from Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade (before you buy) suggests there is no need for formatting

I believe a format is required when moving from 32-bit to a 64-bit operating system.

But, do you have 32 or 64 bit? Look at my other post.

I have upgraded with a clean install a couple of 3 times. Back then, you formatted the HD, put the upgrade version in. Then some place along the install, it would ask you for your old version CD and don't remember if the old key code was required at that time.
At my age, I don't remember what time I got out of bed this morning, but I must have got up as I am here now. And I can tell you things that happened a hundred years ago like I just did it. :D

Please... he want to upgrade to Windows 7 x64 from a 32-bit OS.

So yes you need to do a fresh install. The upgrade version is all you need. There's no difference in contents of the DVD. It's just a matter of pricing & you'll need to provide proof of ownership of the previous version during install.

My question is: How do you put a 64 bit Version on a 32 bit system? Maybe I am missing something here.

The existing OS is 32-bit. The hardware is able to support a 64-bit OS.

OK. I had not seen where it was a 64 bit system. Some people just think that because 32 if double what 64 is that it must be greater than just plain vanilla ice cream and must be twice as fast becuase the numbers are doubled.
