I have multiple drives (ATA and SATA's) C drive is SATA. One of my ATA drives is blocking the PC on boot up. Freezes after Power test and can't recognize the drives. When I remove the suspected ATA drive it boots and runs fine.

I have attached the bad drive to a Sabrent hard drive adaptor using USB which I have used successfully before, but I can't see it in Windows Explorer. If I try to boot with the Sabrent connected I experience the same boot failure. If I look at Hard drive properties, Hardware tab I can see the ATA drive associated with a USB connection. I suspect I removed the power too early on a shutdown, as the PC was working fine when I shut it down and had this problem on the next boot. Do you have any suggestions for me, or do I have a new doorstop?

Hi jarbunic. It looks like the harddrive is no longer functioning correctly. When you boot up the computer and connect the harddrive by USB does the harddrive spin up or does it make a clicking sound?

I would check out the harddrive using the manufacturer's disk diagnostics:

    ExcelStore

    Fujitsu

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Toshiba

    Western Digital

If the harddrive fails the diagnostics test then the harddrive has died and you will have to get it replaced.

The drive spins up when I power up the Sabrent adaptor, but it is not visible to windows.
I tried the WD diags, but the drive is not visible to the Diag program
I also tried the DOS version of the diag but could not boot from it, so I tried it in a DOS window but had no sucess.

Well it sounds like you've ran into a dead end with that harddrive I'm afraid. :(

It looks like you will have to get it replaced. Do you have any data on that harddrive that you need recovered?

Yes, that is the only reason I need to get into it... I tried using GetDataBack which I have used successfully in the past, with no success.
Do you have any other ideas that I could try?

If you already tried using the GetDataBack program to recover your data without success then I'm afraid the drive is toast.

You could try sending the drive to one of those companies that will recover your data for you but obviously that could easily get pretty expensive. I'm sorry that I couldn't be of more help in this situation.

When a harddrive is completely toast and you can't even get recovery software to recognize the drive to recover your data, then there isn't much that you can do.

    Sorry to butt in.

It looks as if there is some problem with the card in your hdd. See if you can lay your hands on the PCB of a working hard disk of the same model no. It might work & you can get your data off the hard disk without spending a fortune.
