Hardware Interrupts is using 35.29% of your CPU cycles.

Check Primary and Secondary IDE settings: Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Primary or Secondary IDE Channel -> Properties -> Advanced Settings. Look at the Current Transfer Mode field.
See, if it's in PIO mode instead of DMA mode.

    Uninstall "Primary ", restart computer.
    It'll be reinstalled automatically.

    Post new settings.

Start-up now at "normal" time frame of ~ 3 minutes.
No chop to Windows "Welcome" music.

However..... The icons by the clock that had come back have now disappeared. :( Oh well... Was used to not having them anyway. :D

Audio sounds great! iTunes isn't working (I have triplicate folders right now due I believe to the System Restores I did previously..... I'll worry about that later), but WMP and RealPlayer are fine. Also tested audio on a web site and YouTube with no issues, either.

    Works for me!

I still have some clean-up work to do, but nothing I should need help on!

Then, I will check my tower computer that had this exact same problem with the Windows sound. If it is still missing, I'll need to start a new thread on that one, of course.

    In the mean time.... THANK YOU ! ! ! ! ! :D

    Hi again...

It's back. Or, more appropriately, they're gone again.

Windows sounds are now not playing. All was OK, until I did a cleaning and re-booted. Now, no Windows "Welcome" audio and just the computer beep instead of the normal Window sounds.

I'm now even more clueless.

Any idea(s) what we do next?

    Morning (my time...)

    ATF-Cleaner, then CCleaner

However ... I think I have much more serious issues.

    Figuring that:
    1 - It couldn't hurt, and
2 - You would probably ask me to do it anyway

I started the "You must follow all these steps..." routine.

While running the GMER, the laptop suddenly rebooted. I don't know why or if it gave any indication of what was going on, as I was watching TV.

Then, I got the following message:

    Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
    Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM

    Operating System not found

After writing all that down, I just shut down the laptop (forced shutdown by holding the power button) then fired up my Vista computer (which is having it's own occassional hissy fit with me... I'll worry about that next week.) and came here.

    Any clue(s) from the above?

Also, I had noticed earlier today (technically, yesterday) that the laptop seemed to be slow on the Internet (and/or was having problems with parts of some web sites (like ads) or pop-ups not popping-up when OKed and the web page it was coming from could NOT be closed but navigating to other pages on that same site worked just fine (and no, not a bad web site... it was one from a reputable company and it was their employment site).

When transfer mode goes from DMA to PIO it may indicate hard drive issue.
At this point your computer is clean so we shouldn't even discuss this new issue in this forum, so I'll only suggest running hard drive diagnostic....

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28744&hl=hard+drive+diagnostic)
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Pa...rivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE

I'll give it a shot (he says with fingers crossed... :) )

    By the way ---

Does having the Windows sounds return mean anything or give any further clue(s)? This laptop has been off all day. When I booted it up just now, the "Welcome" sound played (and you know from my posts from late last night what I've done...)

Took much longer than it should have to get everything up and running. My Toshiba laptop does NOT have a Toshiba Hard Drive in it. :)

Once I finally figured out that it was a Hitachi Hard Drive (and got the CD drive to write on the blank CD I put in  ) everything is finally progressing.

How long it will take, I do not know. You didn't specify, so I choose not to run the "quick" scan.

If quick scan doesn't show anything, run extended (or whatever it's called) one.
