    Hello Everyone!
[Using, W7 + SP1, AVG 2012, Spybot, Malwarebytes - on demand, Firefox 7, IE 9 occasionally, Chrome, occasionally when Firefox goes 'non-responsive!')]

I have my PC arranged to be notified when Windows updates are ready. I then view them and install them as I see fit.

I usually just look at what they are for and do not really take much notice of their KB number.

I have recently found 2 updates ready for installation during the last 5 days.

Yesterday, I thought that I recognised one of the updates and checked back on the update history.

I found that I had unwittingly installed this particular update - KB 2556532 - on 5 previous occasions!

Should I try to uninstall 4 of them or just leave the 5 installed?

Usually, I have found that after installing an update, it does not usually appear again - by that I mean that I do not get notification for some days or sometimes a couple of weeks.

Thanks for taking the time to read this question.

    Colinito

I'm assuming that it is failing to install. See if you can find error codes associated with the failing update in the WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, type %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in Windows Search programs and files box & press Enter

    Arie,

    Thank you for your reply.

I checked through the link that you supplied - there was no error message.

I checked with my Update History and this update successfully installed on 27,28,29, twice on 31st Oct. and the 1st Nov. and once on 2, and 5th.

So, do I just leave it or remove - if possible - to leave only one?

I am now checking each update's number to be sure that I do not install an update more than once.

I am unable to explain why this has appeared for updating and installing on more than one occasion - it is not usual. Furthermore, it has not happened to any other update - I checked them all in my "History "!

    Regards

    Colinito.

Post the last 200 -or so - lines from that log, I'll have a look.

You leave them. Uninstalling won't help you anything... there are no extra files anyway....

Or you could remove them all, and see if it would now install 'in one go' and no longer want to install multiple times...

    Arie,
    Thanks for your reply.
The update keeps coming up as available. I have no idea why. every other upodate that I have installed does not reappear!
I shall have to keep looking at the history before I download and install now, - most annoying!

    Regards

    Colinito.

    Hello Arie,
I am not too sure how to copy only the data, I have therefore taken some screen-shots of downloads from 18 March to 5 Nov. and copy and pasted them in a Word Document, but when I tried to upload them I had the following notice" Upload Errors - Doc1.docx W.Updates 18.3 to 5.11.docx: Invalid File.

What method should I use to record them?

    Regards

    Colinito.

I have no use for any screen shots. I need the contents of WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, type %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in Windows Search programs and files box & press Enter

Copy/paste the last 200 lines or so...

OK, this is what I suggest you do:

    • Click Start, and in the Search box on the start menu, type CMD, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (this will get you an elevation prompt for an Administrator command prompt)
    • At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, then press Enter
    • Next type cat /dev/null > %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log then press Enter (ignore the error that 'cat' isn't recognised... it still does what it is suppose to do)
    • Lastly type net start wuauserv, then press Enter

What we did above was to empty the existing WindowsUpdate.log file.

Now check for Windows updates. Hopefully you'll be offered the update again. Go through all the steps & at the end, copy/paste the contents of %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in your next post.

No errors are shown.... so there's nothing I can say/suggest.

    Windows updates

    Arie,

Many thanks for you time and patience.

The update still appears for installation - so I shall now keep an eye on the numbers of the updates and check them with those already installed - a bit time-consuming, but I see no other way - otherwise I shall be re-installing it every day!

I shall mark the thread as closed - or whatever is the appropriate mark!

    Regards

    Colinito

I would uncheck the update from Windows Update & then hide it...

OK, I have unchecked it, right clicked and checked the Hide choice. I shall now see if that is a permanent "fix" or if it will reappear at a later date!

    Thanks again,

    Regards

    Colinito
