Resolved Can't use Networked printer

Hi all, back again, not my week !
The Canon Pixma iP4200 that was connected to my XP pc and could be used to print from my wifes Vista laptop via my netgear router gave up the ghost after 5 years or so.
I bought a Pixma iP4850, loaded all the CD bits onto my pc and it worked fine. I uninstalled the 4200 drivers/programmes etc.
I tried to access it from my wifes Vista laptop, and although it could be seen in the "add a printer" window, when I selected it, it eventually gave an error message of "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x0000000d).
I needed to print a lot of holiday pics from my wifes computer so I loaded the printer CD onto her laptop and was able to print normally via the USB connection. So now we have the correct drivers and software on both computers, with the share printer boxes ticked on both computers, and both computers seeing files/pics etc on each other.
I now tried to print/ connect from the Vista to my XP (printer connected to XP PC by USB.)
Opened the laptop Network window, XP machine showed as is laptop and router. Clicked add "add a printer ", and then "add a network printer" select the iP4850 then next. A window comes up "connectig to......" and after a minute or so the same error message comes up 0x0000000d ??
I would like to print wirelessly rather than connecting a USB each time I want to use the Laptop.
Any suggestions guys

I read that but am too wary to try and fiddle with the Registry. It seems too complicated for me, (and dangerous) to attempt. All I did after all was to buy a similar printer to the one I had before !!
Any other suggestions ?

Take it to someone that is willing to remove the invalid null from the registry as shown.

To show how little I understand the problem, which computer has the problem ? I sort of guess you mean omly the Vista laptop, not the PC that has the printer attached via the USB,

I have printed off the "link" instructions. I think I will back up the registry set a restore point, and then have a careful look at how to do this, and give it a go. Will report back in a few days, or maybe a couple of weeks if she takes her laptop away with her to visit the family,

OK guys.
I very carefully changed (not complicated to do at all) the iP4850 (and iP4850 series XPS that also showed up), to "=hex(7):00,00 (from "=hex(7):00,00,00,00 ) and I still get the same error when I try to connect to the printer on the XP machine with the Vista laptop. ?? What next

Sorry, thought I had made progress until I realised the printer was connected to the Laptop.
As no improvement I have gone back to the orig reg settings, ie "=hex(7):00,00,00,00
Have just found and tried this :-
1-create a new local printer on xp with port lpt3: and share it
2-restart xp
3-create a network printer on vista and use xp shared printer.supply user & password if you are asked for.(important: lpt3: and not lpt1

When I added the printer I got the "You've successfuly added Canon iP4800 series ". (no 0x0000000d) error)
I clicked the print a test page button three seperate times and it said it has been sent to the printer.
A box then comes up saying printer is not responding.
If I look in printer and faxes on XP, the printer shows up with a queue of 3 pages as it should. ALSO if I open Printers in Vista it also shows 3 items in the Queue. On both computers the print queue box says all 3 times
Test Page Error Printing Guest 1Page 952KB and the date submitted.
It seems we are very close to making this work, but what next. I had to revert to the previously added printer in the USB port to print a document on the XP machine.

Did you stop and restart the Print Spooler?

 

After changing the hex(7) bit, I stopped and started the Print spooler. If you think I have missed something I will go back and do it all again.

Decided my 9 year old XP machine was too old and slow so I have bought a W7 machine and once I found out how, everything talks to everything else so my problem is solved and I will mark this as resolved,
