    Hi all,

Apropos of absolutely nothing my Realtek rtl8187b wireless adapter is not working. I do not think it is the adapters problem because another USB

mounted adapter does not work either. The consistent message I get is "windows couldn't automatically bind the ip protocol stack to the network'.

It is not hard to find this string in Google but none of the many solutions (for others) have worked. Some, but not all of the things I have

    tried:

    - Reinstalled latest version of driver for Realtek about 10 times.
    - Reset tcp/ip
    - Reset (reloaded?) ipv4 and 6
    - Stopped my AVG anti-virus
    - Turned off Windows firewall
    - Tried another adapter that did not work
    - About six other things that I cannot remember.
    - My router is not one of the likely suspects because it is working for all my other wireless devices flawlessly.
    - I did a system restore but apparently it did not go back far enough.
    - These two wireless adapters (Realtek plus USB device) have worked perfectly until last night.

This is happening on the latest update of Windows 7 64bit. To show you just one piece of information, here is what I see when I do a 'ipconfig

/all'. I am hoping the formatting below is not too crazy.

Any and all help and/or suggestions most welcome.

    Thanks very much,
    Jim Lee

Click the Start button, copy and paste (or type in) this command:
    Code:
    cmd /c ipconfig /all>%temp%\$.txt&notepad %temp%\$.txt
    Then press [Enter].

You should end up with a Notepad window open with the results from running the "ipconfig /all" command on your computer.

Click once in the Notepad window, press [Ctrl]+[A] to highlight everything, press [Ctrl]+[C] to copy it to memory, start a response here in this thread, click once in the message window, then press [Ctrl]+[P] to paste in what you stored in memory.

    A little more clarity......

Let me try this again with one update.
I switched out the wireless card with a known good one from another laptop and I see the very same messages. So I am thinking this is some kind of mishap between the Windows 7 os and TCP/IP...or some part of Network communications that I am completely unaware of.

Thanks very much for any help,
    Jim Lee

This is the message I get consistently in 'Network Details' when it fails to connect.

    "IP routing enabled......No "

Is that a large clue staring me in the face?

I just reset the TCP stack by using these commands at the dos command line.
They all came back with successful messages.

    =======================
    netsh winsock reset catalog

    netsh int ip reset reset.log

    netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
    =======================

    Rebooted and same deal.

    Thanks,
    Jim Lee

It appears you're using a driver provided by MS. Use the actual Realtek driver linked at bottom of this page. Copy+paste the link:
    Code:
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/products/productsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=1&Level=6&Conn=5&ProdID=143
Use the latest driver (the beta version). This driver is newer than the MS provided driver.

    Same deal..........

Same deal with the new beta driver. It still says "Microsoft" for the provider.
Also the version number appears to be the same as before. I uninstalled the old driver and reinstalled the new driver twice for good luck.

Most of the threads I found with this same "couldn't automatically bind..." phrase were solved by disabling either the anti-virus software or the firewall.
Is there anything more that I can do to shake up my tcp/ip settings? I cannot see what it could be other than those TCP/IP settings gone awry.

    Thanks,
    Jim Lee

Where is the adapter in "ipconfig /all "? (And the Physical Address, IP Address, Subnet Mask, IP Address, Default Gateway, DHCP Server, DNS Servers, etc., etc., etc.).

Here is ipconfig /all. I noticed that DHCP is not enabled anywhere whereas I have checked and made sure that DHCP is enabled on this PC in my network settings.

    Thanks,

    Another piece of the puzzle?

I am hoping this is some kind of turning point.
I installed Ubuntu on the same laptop and the adapter(s) and wireless communication work like a charm. Which leads me to believe that Windows 7 is in some way at the center of this issue. So I am now wondering what OS stuff in Windows 7 is out of whack. I suppose the driver is still my main suspect but that has been updated and installed more than a few times.

How is the OS involved in my wireless connection?
In one of the error descriptions I do see that 'TCP/IP v4/6 is not available' or words to that effect. How does TCP/IP make itself available to Windows 7?
I think that is where the confusion is. My next move was to reinstall Windows but now that I can connect with Ubuntu I feel like playing this one out to learn something about PC's and wireless connections.

    Thanks very much,
    Jim Lee

Open the Network & Sharing Center > on left go to Change adapter settings > rt click the wifi adapter & select Properties > verify there's check-marks next to:

    Client for MS Networks
    Internet Protocol Version 4

You can remove check-marks next to QoS & IP6.

If your wifi adapter is not listed then you need to use the drivers I suggested. Rt click the setup exe in it's download & choose Run as Admin.

I finally reinstalled Windows OS as a last resort and it worked. It is now a question for the ages.
