I can't not connect to the wireless network. The laptop (HP/Pavilion dv5000, XP Media Center, service pk 2, 968.81 gig free) sitting right next to the wireless mod. says one is not available. I am not tech savvy but did go through all the "help" on it and it still won't connect. I am on a MAC right now that is connected to that wireless. The only thing that could have happened is I used a Registry cleaner.

Can someone tell me what to check and then to do to get my PC back on line?

    Thanks in advance,

    Marie

If at all possible, re-run the registry cleaner and tell it to undo everything it just did.

If that isn't possible, use Windows' "System Restore" to roll Windows back to a previous state when your computer was functioning correctly:
When you get it working, uninstall the registry cleaner.

Install SP3 - fixes a multitude of 'problems'

Further to Ski52 suggestion: You have to install SP3, as SP2 is no longer supported & so you are missing the latest security updates & have a vulnerable system.

    Marie,

This is pretty basic but I thought I would throw it out just in case. Laptops have a switch - either manual on the outside or one of the top row keys (mine uses F2) - that toggles the wireless feature on and off. When mine is toggled off, it will not show available wireless networks. Hope this idea is not too basic and doesn't offend you.

yes check that the wireless is on
you will see a wireless light on the laptop to indicate
You can find the HP manual for you model - by selecting your exact model here
It will be listed on the bottom of your laptop

make sure the switch is "on

    http://goo.gl/LWvOE

next if you can - turn off the security ( encryption) in the router
That way you can make sure if it logs on
If not - or you cannot or don't want to change
Make sure you have the right code
Lastly the windows wireless utility has some odd quirk of placing a check mark on "key provided automatically "
It should be unchecked to connect
When you get to that point - come back and ask how to turn it off
    Good luck
