Resolved Windows Fax and Scan problem

The modem is PCIe Soft Data Fax SoftRing Modem with Smart CP.

It was working fine until recently. Today I had trouble sending a fax of four pages. It would go through page 2 and when it starts page 3 it hangs up and gives an error message "fax cannot be sent because of an unexpected error." I must have tried about a dozen times.

I went into the Control panel and queried the modem and it seems fine.

Yesterday I ran "deep care" of Advanced System Care 4, Could it have messed things up?

Anyway, I would appreciate any help in fixing it and also testing once it is fixed.

 

Why did you run them programs? What kind of problem were you having? I never used them before, but do they have a restore feature with them if you did something with them?

 

It may be a problem on the recipient's end, or somewhere in between.

If possible, test with a different fax machine.

 

I just sent it to hp fax testing number:1-888-473-2963. The first page goes through (just like before -- the cover page and first page went through) and then the fax hangs up wit the error message: "The fax can't be sent because of an unexplained error. "

 

Have you tried using Windows' "System Restore" to roll Windows back to a previous state when your computer was functioning correctly?:

Apparently no system restore points were setup and when I get to System protection window I get another error message: There was an unexpected error in the property page. System Restore encountered an error. Try to run System Restore again (0x81000203).

I believe I restored the system once before after I bought the machine more than two years ago. So this is surprising news for me.

 

Yes,the program has a made a backup of the changes. And I performed the 'undo changes', but still the problem persists.

I disabled the modem and reinstalled its drivers again.

I will now try rebooting windows in safe mode and see if the restoring function works again.

 

I went into Safe Mode and tried to restore the computer (the last restore point was in April). I did it anyway even when there is a warning that the point was too old and some software need to be reinstalled etc. The error message finally said that the restore was not successful and no changes to the computer was made. But that's false. When the computer was rebooted it did go back to a prior state. The restore software was now working except the last restore point was still April. (That means I can't reverse the restore function.) So I have been reinstalling and updating software.

And in the meantime, I also retested the software by sending a fax to the HP number. Unfortunately, it again hung up after the first page. Back to square (or -10?).

 

I just downloaded BVRP phone tools and was able to send a 3-page document attachment with a cover page (I had to first print the pages to BVRP printer for capture of the .tif images as it wouldn't directly take multiple page attachments) through fax to the HP test number. And the transmission was successful. Except I never got an acknowledgement from the HP (which I was supposed to in 5 or 6 minutes). I guess they couldn't care less about my fax.

So, I think the problem lies with the windows fax software. I am still waiting to see if anyone would respond with a fix.

I know that this doesn't fix your problem, but I have Googled Free Fax and used a couple of them before when I had no other choice. Worked great.
