A notebook runs hot whenever it is idle for a few minues. I started Task Manager and found that the notebook was using 100% CPU resources before I clicked the mouse to get the screen back but back to a few percentage from the time I clicked on the mouse. But there is no application running as seen from the Task Manager.

How can I find out which process / service is using up the CPU resources?

In Task Manager did you hit the button 'Show processes for all users'?
Process Explorer and/or Process Monitor - both from MS.
