Wow. You have a lot of stuff running.

I see that your computer is running both Mcafee and Symantec for security. I would suggest that you uninstall both programs as removing those security suites will dramatically impact your computers performance. Follow these steps:

    1. Download and run the McAfee Removal Tool.
    2. After the tool has finished removing McAfee download and run the Norton Removal Tool
    3. Once thats done reboot the computer and install Microsoft Security Essentials.
    4. Click Start< Control Panel< Uninstall a program and remove any AVG entries that you find in the list.
    5. Download and run the Autoruns program from the link in post #5 and click on the Logon Tab. Uncheck the following items from startup, hkcmd.exe, igfxpers.exe, GrooveMonitor.exe, vprot.exe, ehtray.exe, wmpnscfg.exe, ONENOTEM.EXE, ReminderHelper.exe. If you find that you need some of those programs running on startup that I listed simply recheck its checkbox in Autoruns and reboot the system.
    6. Click Start< Run and type services.msc and hit enter. Set the startup type on these services to disabled- Agere Soft Modem Call Progress Service Agere Systems, ULCDRSvr Ulead Systems Inc, ToolbarU Application, Windows Defender, Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service Microsoft Corporation (Only disable the Windows Media Player Network sharing service if you don't share your media across multiple computers on your network)

Let me know how your computer is running.

    On step 5. I could not locate: vprot.exe, ehtray.exe, ReminderHelper.exe

On step 6. I could not locate: ULCDRSvr Ulead Systems Inc, ToolbarU Application

But everything seems to run so very much better!
I really apreciate all that you all have done for me so far :)

So have you already uninstalled both Mcafee and Symantec Security Suites? Have you installed Microsoft Security Essentials?

On Step 5 look for the following entries to remove: VProtect Application, Media Center Tray Applet Microsoft Corporation, WeCareReminder Helper App We-Care.com. Those entries are the same ones that you said that you couldn't locate. Hopefully those entries will appear under those names instead.

On Step 6 look for the services that have these names: ToolbarUpdater, ULCDRSvr.

You probably couldn't find those services or startup programs because they are a different name. Pay attention to the startup path of the program. If it ends in the name of the program that needs to be removed then chances are that is the one that you can delete.

not sure what to do now, I am very thankful for your help and direction, but I simply cannot find those programs.

There is a Find Feature on Autoruns and still I cannot find any entries on that or services.msc that even remotely resymbol the ones your indicated.

Perhaps its as simple as I am overlooking them but not sure what to do.

    Thanks again.

Ok without seeing a screenshot of the Autoruns program I don't know if those entries are there or not.

Take a screenshot of the Autoruns logon tab program so that I can see what entries are starting up with your system. If you don't know how to take a screenshot take a look here, Take a Screenshot.

Once you saved the picture file go to http://imageshack.us/ and upload the screenshot on that site. Then in your next reply copy the link of the URL on the imageshack website so that I can see the screenshot.

Also make sure that when you are taking the screenshot that in Autoruns you click File< Run As Administrator so that it shows all of the entries on the Logon Tab.

Try shutting of TeaTimer in Spybot and see if it helps. It can always be turned back on.

Wow there are certainly a lot of entries there.

Uncheck the following items: 00TCrdMain, Google Desktop, IgfxTray, RtHDVCpl, Skytel, SmoothView, Windows Defender, Windows Mail, TomTomHomeRunner, TOSCDSPD. Reboot the computer when done.

Since the computer has Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you can disable the Windows Defender service. To do this click Start< Run and type services.msc and hit enter. Scroll down and set the Windows Defender service to Disabled. Reboot the computer again.

system doesn't seem to want to run the updates due to some sort of errors, oddly enought when i use a different link on my desktop to Internet Explorer I do not get the error message. So I guess problems solved. I deleted the old link.

the link is post #31 is for the wrong version of IE9, my system is 32 bit not 64 bit.

I went to the windows website and downloaded the correct version but while installing it said i need to update.

While trying to update windows as instructed some updates failed.

Could you post the error code that you get when the updates failed?

As mentioned earlier in my postings, the laptop belongs to my parents, who posted under the screen name Marsha Lynn. They needed the laptop back so if anyone continues the troubleshooting process, it will be them, sorry I couldn't finish things out but the laptop was honestly good enough for their needs at this point. I will remind them there was an error updating windows to get IE9 but do not know if they will pursue it or not.

I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping them out, they have a lot o important memories on that computer, and it means a lot to us to get things right and running again, though at this point the laptop in question will be 2ndard to their newly purchased unit.

There has been talk of an external harddrive to back things up on both computers and i will keep after them to do so. Again you all have been so generous with your time and assistance, thanks again.

Thats good to hear. :) If your parents do decide to pursue the error message when upgrading to IE9 then they can either post in this thread or create a new thread if this one gets too old.

I am glad that the computer is working well and hopefully you can help get the data on the computer backed up to an external harddrive.
