Running Vista, when I defrag' my hard disk on my Dell laptop it never finishes, it just says defragmenting hard disk with a little circle going round. Yesterday I started defrag first thing in the morning and it was still going when I went to bed. Any solutions please.

    Regards Paul Shillam

    Try defragging in Safe Mode.

Hi Paul Shillam. The built in Windows defrag utility has been notorious for taking a long time to defrag users systems. If defragging in Safe Mode doesn't help speed up the defrag process then I would suggest that you install a 3rd party disk defrag utility which should hopefully be able to defrag your harddrive.

I would recommend using Auslogics Disk Defrag for this task since I've been using that program for years and it definitely does a good job at defragmenting your computer. Plus its much faster than the Windows defrag utility.
