Because Microsoft and Google tend to confuse the two, let me specify that i'm talking about THE Administrator account, not any administrative-capable account. The default account that comes with any modern Windows install and is hidden (well, somewhat hidden) by default.

When adding a password to Administrator, I get this message--

"If you do this, Administrator will lose all EFS-encrypted files, personal certificates and stored passwords for Web sites or network resources. "

Will this have any unforeseen consequences down the line? It didn't in XP but i'm fairly new to 7, so I don't know if this will break something for a stupid reason later on.

    Thanks :)

Hi sduibek. Adding a password to the default Administrator account in Windows 7 shouldn't have any unforeseen consequences. If you are a bit nervous about adding the password you can always create a System Restore point first.

If adding the password used the same procedure in Windows XP then it should have the same functionality in Windows 7.

Well, you should logon as Administrator in Safe Mode, then access the Users applet via control panel. Set a password for the Administrator account.

No need to worry about that message because you've likely never logged on using that account and set encrypted files, downloaded certs or accessed sites.
