I am running Windows Vista 500 GB w/ 4.00 GB Memory.
    Norton 2009 Antivirus.
    I am on Dial Up.
There was a auto LiveUpdate failure and I learned of this when I received a notification that the definitions were not up to date.
I attempted to update manually and got an error message informing that "the files were corrupted ".
Action: I uninstalled and re-installed the software, which,of course made it necessary to go back some 135 MB to the beginning.
When I downloaded definitions manaully I discovered the following.
The operation would check for definitions and download them but would not process/install them. At this point there would be a message that "not all definitions were complete" and all the downloaded ones would be dumped.

I have gotten an indication from Windows Defender that there could be a problem on this computer with installation files for Windows Update but would this problem be connected with virus definition installation. I have not tried to correct this since it involves security. Assistance would be appreciated: Les

Don't try using Windows Defender: It should be disabled by Norton.

Try again to update Norton, and post the full error message if yo receive another error.

Arie: I will try to make some of information in my post a little clearer.
    1. My reference to Windows Defender is confusing. I actually checked Windows Problem Reports and Solutions.where I found a solution concerning a failure to install some Windows Updates. The reccommended solution was to make adjustments on the security settings, which I am hesitant to do. This search did not occur during Norton LiveUpdate. My question was could this be also effecting Processing/Installing virus definitions?
    2. I will try updating definitions again but it might fail at action "Processing Update" immediately or it might fail after 120/130 MB. .but it states in red at the panel top. Some Updates Failed To Complete ". RE My Post.
I really appreciate your help. Les Bamburg

    From Les:

I ran LiveUpdate until it stopped & here are the results.

At top of LiveUpdate Window in RED: "Not all updates were successful "

The Three actions and their results are as follows.

    1. Check for updates: Completed.

    2. Download updates: Completed.

    3. Process updates: Failed to complete.

    Thanks again: Les Bamburg.

Type %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in your Start Search box & press Enter

Post the last 100 (or so) lines here.

    norton 2009 update error

Arie: I' sorry but I have been away for awhile and during that time I have changed to Norton 2012 (With the same results as with 2009). I am now attempting to locate a High-Speed connection where I can download Intelligent Definitions file and run it on my computer. I will post the results as soon as possible, or should I discontinue this thread and start a new one?
Would appreciate ypur advice: Les Bamburg.

    2009 liveupdate error

Since I have not committed any action to this issue recently I had a look at the status of definition update and discovered that instead of the over 300 days since the last definition update it now indicated 50 days and instead of the roughly 125 MB to be downloaded it only indicated 60.94MB, so I started a download and was able to download and process all the definitions without a glitch. I then ran a full scan and the system is now secure and the definitions are up to date.
I am not wise enough to explain what brought on this change but would like to offer the following suggestions: 1. I always have the anti-virus set on automaticLiveUpdate so obviously there had been definitions downloaded every time that I signed onto the internet. 2. I have recently installed System Mechanic and the cleaning and adjustments as a result of this might just have added enough speed to my connection to make the difference.
So in light of this I am declaring this issue (RESOLVED). I will be unsubscribing this thread ASAP.
Thanks so much for your help and support: Les Bamburg

    norton 2009 update error

    Arie:
I am so sorry that, in my inexperience, I might seem les than courteous, but believe me I do not mean to be, because I really appreciate all that windowsbbs has done to help me.
When I changed to Norton 2012 I posed a question as whether I should start a new thread, but the reply must have gotten misplaced, but nevertheless as I stated, the resolution came out of the blue and I have no idea what it was a result of though I did offer some possible suggestions.
If I had applied some of the suggestions that I thought might have contributed I would have certainly stated the fact. I am just so happy that it seems to have been resolved.
I did, in fact go to "thread tools" to mark this (Resolved) but it gave me no choice except "printable version" so perhaps you can tell me what I did wrong.
Arie, I resolve to commit to memory the rules and regulations so that in future I might avoid being offensive. I want to thank you and windowsbbs again for all the help and good intentions that you have proffered.
    Very respectfully yours: Les Bamburg

I get what you are saying... you already mentioned that things 'fixed themselves', the point of marking this as Resolved is so that other users don't have to offer a solution.

That means that you where not signed into your account when you tried to mark the thread. Once you are signed in, you'll see other options beneath Thread Tools.

    norton 2009 update error:

les bamburg to Arie: "norton 2009 update error ".( wrap up)
*Since I have still not been able to mark this situation as "resolved" I would like to offer the following as the theoretical solution.
I know that ideally, it is best to submit a solution that leaves no doubt as to it's authenticity, but since I can not do this I would like to offer the following for your evaluation.
    1. I beleive that the main culprit is (was) my agonizingly slow dial-up internet connection, coupled with a version of antivirus ( Norton 2009) that would not tolerate the pauses and interruptions associated with this service, thus the complete download was rejected out of hand. ( I would like to state here that at the time of failure I had been using Norton 2009 for well over 2 years, successfully, during which time my connection speed had decreased.
    2. I believe that the solution came about when I installed Norton 2012 which is an advanced version with a totally new method of definition download that is designed to help in slow internet (dial up) connections, plus at this time I was finally able to find and repair the problems that was slowing down the connection.

*Arie: I am always "LOGGED IN" TO my account when I POST, REPLY, QUOTE, EDIT so perhaps I am confusing "LOGGED IN" with "SIGNED IN" as you recommended that I do. Please clear that up for me because I would like to mark this one "RESOLVED ".
Thank you again for your effort patience: Les Bamburg.
