    Hi,
I am getting the following message while trying to disconnect the External USB drive after making a back up:

"The device 'Generic Volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping this device again later "

This happens everytime now so I cannot disconnect the USB External drive.

    I have tried the "Unlocker ", and the "USB_Disk Ejector.exe ".

I also tried the "Process Explorer" previously, when this first started happening but that didn't help either.

These are the items that Unlocker found that are apparently preventing my external USB drive from being disconnected:
Process Path Locked PID Handle Process Path

    System K:\System Volume Information\EfaData\SYMEFA.DB 4 756 System
    System K:\System Volume Information\EfaData\SYMEFA.DB 4 960 System

Does anyone know of any other method to disconnect this type of external drive properly.

    Thanks

Rebooting or shutting downn will work for sure...

But just opening Win Explorer or My computer can cause the problem.

Often times if you will just wait a few minutes, try again the and the drive should eject OK.

Hi Steve, Thanks for the reply.

I tried waiting previously, for quite awhile, but I still get the same error message.

I have also shut down and then restarted and then plugged this drive in and I still get the same error message.

It just seems like this error message never goes away.

In WIn Explorer right click on the drive and select Properties. Look for the two options:

    1) Optimize for Quick Removal
    2) Optimize for performance

Set it to the first option.

    Hi Steve,
I already have this drive optimized for quick removal and I still have this error problem.

It notes you can disconnect this drive without using the Safe Removal Icon but I have tried disconnecting and then I got a message that Windows did not complete writing to this disk.
I am running Windows XP, SP3 with Windows XP Professional and this external drive is a Western Digital Portable drive.
I have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional and I use a Toshiba portable external drive for back ups on this computer and I never experience this error problem with this set up.
    Thanks

    Hi Steve,
I just want to post that I believe I have just found the solution to my problem. I did contact Symantec & they advised Uninstalling NAV 2011 & then reinstalling NAV 2012.

Well I tried uninstalling NAV 2011 & then tried the Safely Remove Hardware but that didn't solve my problem.
I finally used Norton Removal Tool and removed all Norton products from my computer. I then tried the Safely Remove Hardware & it finally worked. So it was being caused by Norton products.
I then installed MS Security Essentials & Norton Ghost 15 and the Safely Remove Hardware still allowed me to safely remove my external USB 2.0 drive.
So far, this seems to have solved my problem.
    Thanks for your help.

That makes a lot of sense that Norton was monitoring the drive and causing the problem.
